Degree and area of specialization:
Juris Doctor from an A.B.A. accredited law school by anticipated start date. Spring 2019 graduates are eligible.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
0-2 years. This is an entry-level position with no minimum professional experience practicing law required.
Required:
1. Interest in and ability to develop expertise in principal practice areas and other higher education legal issues relevant to mission of a public research institution.
2. Commitment to joining litigation practice.
3. Strong legal research skills.
4. Effective communication skills in both written and verbal presentation, including all aspects of legal writing technique and procedure
5. Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and professional manner with peers/clients.
6. Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and objectives.
Desired:
The entry-level position will require growth over time to develop the following additional knowledge, abilities, and skills. Strong candidates may possess some or all of the desired qualifications.
1. Demonstrated interest in higher education issues.
2. Knowledge of state and federal employment and labor laws.
3. Knowledge of public records and open meetings laws and principles.
4. Familiarity with the constitutional, statutory and regulatory framework applicable to, and policy issues affecting, public institutions of higher education.
5. Experience with different phases of litigation and appearing before adjudicative bodies.
6. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and professional discretion in the identification, management, and resolution of legal issues.
7. Demonstrated experience managing complex and novel legal issues.
License or Certificate:
Membership in good standing in the State Bar of Wisconsin or admission to the State Bar of Wisconsin within one year of hire date.
Position Summary:
The UW-Madison Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) is comprised of 13 in-house attorneys who provide legal advice and representation on the wide range of complex and highly specialized legal issues affecting the research-intensive and flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System.
The Associate University Legal Counsel position is a professional, entry level, academic staff position in OLA. The duties of the position include rendering oral and written advice, advising various university committees, and participating in training and preventive law presentations on a broad array of complex and novel legal subjects for UW-Madison administrators, faculty, and staff.
