Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesThe Technical Director designs, maintains, and supervises work spaces associated with media production, including an equipment stockroom, video editing labs, and a production studio and audio booth. The position actively supports students and faculty in production and studies courses and projects, so the department seeks a candidate with specialized filmmaking skills (including professional experience with video, audio, and lighting) and who also has an interest in serving the larger educational goals of the Film Department. In addition to core duties relating to instructional support and management of production spaces, this position calls for someone who is able to take the lead on researching, purchasing, and implementing relevant production equipment and software in ways that serve the evolving needs of the Film Department.

Strategic Partner / Liaison Responsibilities:
  • Actively researches relevant media arts software and equipment to make recommendations to the faculty about their usefulness to the department and curriculum. This may include reading industry publications, attending conferences like NAB, visiting rental houses to test equipment, reading manuals online, and working with particular models to decide what is affordable, easiest, and most effective for students at all levels of expertise.
  • Plans and leads software and equipment-focused workshops for students and faculty (including labs and in-class tech demos) as well as those covering safety issues when shooting in the studio and on location.
  • Works one-on-one with students seeking technical support.
  • Actively supports the changing curricular needs of the faculty.
  • Works closely with the chair of the department and production faculty to recommend production and post-production software and hardware purchases based on budgets and needs.
Manager Responsibilities:
  • Manages the department's stockroom, production studio spaces, video editing labs and workstations valued in excess of $500,000. This requires budget management as well as knowledge of industry best practices surrounding production equipment.
  • Develops and oversees best practices for stockroom organization, management, and equipment checkout procedures, including equipment inventory.
  • Supervises the Media Coordinator and four student academic stockroom interns.
  • Maintains all equipment through timely updates and outside repairs when necessary.


Qualifications
Required Experiences, Skills, and Credentials:A minimum of seven years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of three years of relevant experience. A Master's in a related field is highly desirable. Hands-on experience as a filmmaker, DP, or related roles.Expertise with professional video, audio, lighting, and grip equipment.Proficiency with video editing and media arts software, including but not limited to the Adobe Creative Suite and Pro Tools.Ability to master new software and skills quickly to keep current with ever-changing technological and curricular needs of the Department.Expert knowledge of video and audio workflows from development to final delivery (including codecs, integration with camera formats, and media management). Expert knowledge of current Mac operating systems; experience with RAID and server configurations and workflows relevant to media arts labs. Excellent communication and project management skills. Interested in the pedagogy of filmmaking and in working with students; ability to design demos and workshops.Ability to stay engaged with technological developments in digital filmmaking and media arts.Ability to rig lights in a studio grid system and familiarity with electrical distribution in a studio setting are strongly preferred. Must have excellent communication skills (for interacting with students, faculty, the College, vendors, and equipment technicians). Occasional scheduling flexibility requested for certain support duties relating to events, classes, and projects after hours or on weekends.Requires excellent organization skills.
