Social Media Specialist - Athletics and Recreation

PAY GRADE: 29E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Social Media Specialist at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Athletics and Recreation Services, upholding and embracing the department mission of "Inspiring Greatness Together." Under the general direction of the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Specialist is primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of assigned social media accounts, which reach recruits, students, student-athletes, alumni, and fans, among others.

Tasks include developing unique and original content, coordinating social media campaigns across the department to drive traffic and support Athletics' mission, auditing brand channel audiences, researching external engagement opportunities and monitoring of all platforms to advise of current chatter and potential brand and/or public relations issues. Additional responsibilities include researching emerging platforms and advising the Social Media Manager on how to further evaluate or implement, assisting in developing social media workshops for Athletics' coaches and staff and providing social media support for the crisis management team.

With a focus on amplification of digital content, the Social Media Specialist will also coordinate with the external team for the planning, content implementation, distribution and reporting of major events and milestones for assigned teams.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage assigned sports day-to-day social media presence across social media channels, including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
  • Assist in the planning of social media content calendar and develop or collaborate with creative teams to create unique multimedia, copy and content for social media outlets, including videos, graphics, executing contests, campaigns, curation of user-generation content, real-time coverage and more.
  • Use social media channels to increase brand recognition, highlight student-athletes and coaches, improve value perception, drive ticket sales, engage fans, and promote events.
  • Assist coaching staffs with social media onboarding and best practices.
  • Share news, create conversations, gather fan sentiment and drive innovation across all key social media outlets
  • Evolve Delaware Athletics' voice for each social media channel in a way that is innovative and engaging, while remaining consistent with the brand's vision and Delaware standards.
  • Provide event support at assigned events through live social media coverage.
  • Grow assigned social media channels following and online community.
  • Act as vital customer service arm by responding to patron's comments via social media channels in a timely manner and with the correct information.
  • Monitor and analyze social media analytics to guide strategy and best practices.
  • Compile reports on major brand moments/events and advise on best practices and future opportunities from those insights.
  • Continuously assess marketing strategies and apply industry practices while staying up-to-date on industry trends and ensuring that Delaware remains at the forefront of the digital marketing landscape.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software, specifically Photoshop, Premier Pro, and After Effects.
  • Coordinates multiple projects around tight deadlines.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Sports Management or Multimedia preferred.
  • Well-versed in utilizing social media management tools.
  • Familiarity working with a variety of social media platforms, as well as other digital creation and distribution tools that go beyond social media.
  • Experience executing digital content and social media strategies to align with audience behaviors, goals and key messages to drive audience engagement.
  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure and format of a range of digital material spanning text and multimedia.
  • Experience managing, coordinating and motivating interns, volunteers and/or students.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Google Drive suite.
  • Ability to work effectively, manage expectations and interact with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
