All coverages begin on the first day of the month following the hire date. Employees are covered under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and are vested 100% after five years of full time service.

The Kern Community College District provides a maximum contribution of 75% of the existing premium cap to an excellent health and welfare benefits plan. The employee pays 25% of the existing premium cap in addition to their selected plan employee contribution cost.

The District also provides life insurance plans for the employee, as well as an 8.25% contribution to the State Teachers Retirement plan. Additional types of insurance may be purchased with pre-tax dollars through an IRS 125 flexible benefit program.

Basic Function:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, service, repair and overhaul a variety of grounds equipment; perform a variety of grounds keeping duties related to landscaping and maintenance of grounds and related facilities at an assigned campus location.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
-Service, repair and overhaul a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and power tools, including mowers, edgers, trimmers, blowers, vacuums, saws and dump trucks; sharpen blades of grounds equipment. E
-Select materials, equipment and tools necessary to complete servicing and maintenance projects; order supplies and repair parts; stock and inventory commonly used repair parts and supplies. E
-Perform scheduled maintenance of grounds equipment; maintain records of servicing; monitor supply costs for budgeting purposes. E
-Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides to college grounds including fence lines, athletic playing fields, flower and shrubbery beds and walkways; apply fertilizers to turf and ornamental areas. E
-Water, mow, weed, trim and fertilize lawns; rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, courts and other facilities. E
-Plant, water and maintain landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; trim and prune bushes, trees and shrubs; stake trees; perform landscaping in newly developed areas. E
-Perform maintenance and repair of the irrigation system; change and adjust heads; maintain controllers and participate in irrigation system installation. E
-Operate grounds maintenance equipment including a small dump truck, backhoe, rototiller, skip loader and forklift; operate power tools including mowers, edgers and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment. E
-Maintain clean and orderly work area; maintain safety standards. E
-Assist in training new staff members; assist in supervising student workers.
-Exercise functional and technical supervision over part-time staff and student assistants as assigned.
-Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including specialized training in the servicing and repair of grounds maintenance equipment and tools and three years of increasingly responsible experience performing grounds maintenance and equipment repair duties.

Note: Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an evaluation service.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California drivers license.

Knowledge and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
-Methods, practices, equipment and tools used in the servicing and repair of small engines and related grounds maintenance equipment.
-Principles and procedures of gas and arc welding.
-Principles and procedures of grounds maintenance.
-Methods, practices, equipment and tools used in the maintenance of landscaped areas and facilities.
-Procedures of pesticide and herbicide application.
-Principles and procedures of record keeping.
-Safe work practices.

ABILITY TO:
-Diagnose and service grounds maintenance equipment and power tools.
-Perform full range of grounds maintenance.
-Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required to perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
-Use a variety of grounds keeping equipment, supplies and materials.
-Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment.
-Work independently in the absence of supervision.
-Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
-Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
-Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.



Salary Grade: 36.0
