Web QA Tester, IT-Web Development

PAY GRADE: 29S

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The IT Web Development Department is responsible for the specifications, development and implementation of institution-wide web-based information services that support the University's core business processes. The unit provides process design and development services to both administrative and academic clients, maintaining significant responsibility for and impact upon the development of new and improved campus business systems.

The Web Quality Assurance (QA) Tester designs, develops, modifies and executes software test plans for complex web applications in accordance with project requirements, IT-WD UX design standards and accessibility best practices. The incumbent will review project specifications and ensure that requirements stated are correct, unambiguous, and verifiable in order to estimate, prioritize, and plan testing activities. This position works both independently and as part of a team.

The Web QA Tester reports to the Associate Director of Web Resource Group.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs quality assurance for implementation of new web applications and for changes to existing applications including browser, platform, and functional testing and debugging.
  • Designs, develops, modifies and executes software test plans for complex web applications in accordance with project requirements, IT-WD UX design standards and WCAG 2.0 accessibility requirements.
  • Reviews project specifications and ensures that requirements stated are correct, unambiguous, and verifiable in order to estimate, prioritize, and plan testing activities.
  • Develops and maintains thorough knowledge and understanding of project(s).
  • Analyzes products and technical user stories and creates, documents and executes relevant testable scenarios.
  • Prepares test plans, test cases and test strategy documentation.
  • Develops, maintains and executes test automation using Selenium, or similar tool.
  • Identifies discrepancies between expected and actual results, appropriately document defects, and validates fixes.
  • Provides status updates to managers, and escalates issues appropriately.
  • Develops a general familiarity with the many business systems of the institution and associated technologies.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts. Works within the department's overall strategic plan following project priorities and scope. Meets deadlines and achieves goals.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with three years of job related experience, or equivalent combination of education, certification, and/or experience. A degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience testing large, complex web based applications.
  • Experience in preparing test plans, test cases and test strategy documentation.
  • Proficiency in manual testing.
  • Hands-on experience with test automation tools such as Selenium highly desirable.
  • Experience testing with various versions web browsers (eg: IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari)
  • Knowledge of web development best practices, usability, and WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.
  • Experience with html and accessibility validation tools.
  • Ability to write and edit javascript and CSS.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to identify, own, and solve problems independently or as part of a team.
