The department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at The University of Alabama invites qualified candidates for a faculty position (tenure-track or tenured) at the Associate or Full Professor rank with specializations relevant to convergent and emerging areas of mechanical engineering in either sustainable cyber-physical energy systems or human-technology frontier applications.
The ME department has over 1,750 undergraduate students, and over 100 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The present faculty size of 28 is expected to significantly grow over the next several years through this search and other planned faculty hires. The department is comprised of three main groups: Thermofluids Science, Dynamic Systems and Control, and Materials Processing and Manufacturing; and has research clusters and state-of-the-art laboratories in internal combustion engines, thermal and building energy, human-machine interaction and soft robotics, additive manufacturing, nanomechanical characterization, bio-inspired nanocomposite, and automotive engineering, just to name a few. With a total annual sponsored program awards of about $6 million, ME is home to several federally/state-funded centers. Mechanical Engineering is one of the seven departments in the fully accredited College of Engineering which has over 6,000 students and home to more than 150 tenure/tenure-track faculty. The College also houses nine research centers and is active in the University's four new research institutes: Alabama Transportation Institute, Alabama Water Institute, Alabama Cyber Institute, and Alabama Life Research Institute. The College occupies well over 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities with research and instructional space, including the $300 million Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014 and the newly reopened $22 million renovated H.M. Comer.
Established in 1831, The University of Alabama (UA) currently enrolls over 38,000 students and employs over 1,700 full and part-time faculty members in thirteen colleges and schools. In 1837, UA became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA is the fastest growing flagship university in the nation, and the second fastest growing public university. The University of Alabama is ranked among the top 60 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report's annual college rankings for more than a decade, and ranked 51st among public universities in the 2018 rankings. The University is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a metropolitan population of over 150,000.
Applicants must have a PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Industrial experience is desired and collaboration with other departments in the College of Engineering is expected. Applicants must show the potential to establish an independent quality research program, collaborate effectively with other faculty, and excel in teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. For consideration at the Associate or Full Professor levels, applicants must demonstrate strong records in external funding, publication, and a PhD graduation rate commensurate with this level of appointment.
