Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelors degree in Information Systems, Computer Sciences or a related field required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
-Minimum three (3) years experience required or five (5) years preferred in developing, implementing and testing security controls for systems (e.g., web applications and/or servers).
-Demonstrated understanding of network design, security protocols and systems administration.
-Demonstrated experience collaborating across cross-functional teams to determine status of risk and remediation options. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
-Ability to effectively communicate technical information and IT security concepts appropriately in writing, verbally and in formal presentation to non-technical leaders.
-Demonstrated background in developing sound information technology policies and procedures.
-Experience working with a healthcare system, and/or large public academic institution strongly preferred.
-Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements related to HIPAA, FISMA, and Human Subjects Research strongly preferred.
-Demonstrated commitment to professional development

License or Certificate:
A management oriented security certificate, either CISSP or CISM preferred. If not held, expected to be able to obtain within one year.

A Vulnerability Assessment certification, e.g. GWAPT, is also preferred and, if not held, would be expected within one year.

Position Summary:
This position has day-to-day responsibility for all aspects of data security, network security and HIPAA security compliance throughout the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). Reporting to the Senior Director, Information Technology, this position will be a leader on the SMPH Central IT team and work closely with the Shared Services Infrastructure Team. The position will also work proactively with IT and non-IT leaders to develop strategies for SMPH to reduce cybersecurity risk, handle sensitive patient and research data securely, protect intellectual property and other restricted data (such as student- or employment-related records), and serve as a resource for faculty/staff regarding SMPH Information Technology resources, processes, and policies. In addition to leading his/her team technically, this person must cultivate strong working relationships with SMPH Information Technology Directors as well as IT and Compliance leadership at UW-Madison and UW Health.
