Supervising Carpenter


Position Description
The Facilities Management and Development (FMD) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management and development of facilities on the university campus. The Supervising Carpenter works within the Carpenter Shop of the Facilities Operations Department of FMD. The purpose of the Carpenter Shop is to provide maintenance, repair, and renovation services for campus buildings and grounds as they relate to the carpentry trade that meet or exceed our customers' expectations.

Under general supervision, the Supervising Carpenter is primarily responsible for supervising and working with one or more groups or crew of skilled journey-level carpenters and semi-skilled assistants in the performance of general carpentry maintenance work and/or new construction and major remodeling projects.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program AND two years of experience as a journey-level carpenter, including two years in a lead/supervisory capacity.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:
- Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
- The ability to obtain AHERA Supervisor certification for asbestos related work and Cal/OSHA Lead training.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
1. Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques.
2. Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade as well as knowledge of applicable state and federal safety, building and construction codes and regulations.
3. Working knowledge of and ability to perform job design work and work sequencing related to construction projects.
4. Ability to plan, direct and provide instruction to the work of skilled crafts workers and their semi-skilled assistants.
5. Ability to determine and coordinate staffing, costs, time, and material and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects.
6. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
7. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
8. Ability to effectively and accurately maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
9. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications, and make rough sketches.
10. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, and internet as well as online calendaring and email.
11. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
12. Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
13. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation and the ability to read, write and perform arithmetic functions at a level appropriate to the position.
14. Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and dependable manner, as well as establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
15. Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
16. Ability to demonstrate professionalism in entering occupied areas including student residential halls, faculty and staff offices and other university space.

  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

  • Ability to work in and around confined spaces; perform heavy lifting up to 50 lbs., including up four flights of stairs; and squat, kneel and crawl.
  • Ability to work in a bucket truck or other high lift equipment.
  • Ability to utilize both hands to safely manipulate the parts and tools of the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection. A Cal/OSHA mandated medical evaluation is required prior to the use of a respirator.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Non Exempt" and is therefore subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
