Social Media Coordinator

Organization Description:

Semester at Sea, administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education, provides undergraduates with a global voyage exploring and studying people, places, and cultures around the world. More than 68,000 students have studied abroad with Semester at Sea and its predecessor program since its founding in 1963. Semester at Sea is a non-profit 501c3 education organization. Colorado State University is the program’s academic partner.

General Responsibilities:

 Social media specialists are responsible for generating and maintaining a presence on social media sites, such as Facebook or Twitter, as well building an audience through campaigns, ads and updates. Just as important as the campaigns they run are the data points they derive. Social media specialists are often tasked with making the connection between statistics and how they translate to a campaign's success, branding and, of course, encourage potential students to take action.

The SAS Social Media Coordinator will attract and interact with our targeted virtual communities and networks users. The goal is to gradually achieve superior student and alumni engagement and intimacy, website traffic and marketing reach by strategically exploiting all aspects of the social media marketing roadmap.

Responsibilities:

  • Continue to build and execute social media strategy based on past voyages, through competitive research, platform determination, bench-marking, messaging and audience identification
  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, video or HTML) that builds meaningful connections and encourages our community members to take action
  • Optimize SAS pages within each platform to increase the visibility of the SAS social content
  • Moderate and respond to all user-generated content in line with the SAS mission and goals
  • Create editorial calendars, and production schedules
  • Continuously capture and analyze the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices during each voyage, and then provide action on the data
  • Fully equipped to produce social media content in-the-field (laptop required, photo/video equipment optional but recommended)
  • Develop and write content for social media posts and blogs
  • Complete the Semester at Sea Training Program in Fort Collins, Colorado
  • Complete other duties/tasks as assigned

Candidate Characteristics And Objectives

  • Desire to provide exceptional customer service and outstanding results
  • Capacity to interact well with the public as well as internal employees
  • Resourceful, entrepreneurial spirit, with the ability to find solutions to problems and ask the appropriate questions
  • Ability to follow direction

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA in journalism, communications, marketing communications, public relations, or social media, with at least two years of experience in the media field, directly related to the above position.
  • Must exhibit comprehensive abilities in traditional media writing skills, including press releases, PR outreach, developing media budgets, and development/management of media contacts, all integrated into social media channels.
  • Online work samples showing social media content production in multiple channels. (No DVD or print samples will be accepted.)
  • Must be operating on the Apple Mac platform.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred
  • Be committed to the role of higher education in society, sensitive to the mission of higher education and understanding of the culture of a shipboard nonprofit institution.

Compensation:

  • At least 12 weeks, part time (up to 28 hours/week) in advance of the voyage: $10/hr. 
  • Receives a voyage stipend of $3,000, paid in three equal installments during the voyage. Also receives travel allowance for airfare and hotel accommodation through STA Travel. Finally, receives a taxable $500 stipend, paid on the first installment during the voyage.
  • Coverage of field programs worth up to $7,000.
