Director of the Bucknell University Press

Bucknell University Press (founded 1968), an introductory member of the Association of University Presses, partners with Rutgers University Press. BUP publishes c. 28-30 titles per year in English and American literature (particularly eighteenth-century studies), Iberian studies, Latin American studies, memoirs, and a broad range of work in the humanities including environmentalism, race, culture, film, and history. BUP publishes 10 different book series through the work of series editors both on campus and based in other universities. BUP is vitally connected to various Bucknell institutions, supports the scholarly ecosystem on campus, and seeks the advancement of Bucknell faculty, as well as the professionalization of students through internships.

The Director of the Bucknell University Press is the executive officer as well as the chief commissioning / acquiring editor of the Press. The Director is responsible for the overall administration and successful operations of the Press, including the creation and maintenance of a vibrant publishing program.

Responsibilities and duties include:
• Leading and managing the publishing endeavor in all its aspects.
• Establishing the strategic vision, priorities, and goals for the publishing program and collaborating with internal and external constituencies to implement and manage.
• Chairing the editorial board to evaluate new projects.
• Overseeing the Press' current book series and establishing priorities in conjunction with their editors.
• Hiring, supervising, and providing guidance to the Press staff including student employees/interns.
• Effectively collaborating with the partner press to manage all aspects of the publishing program and develop new book series.
• Overseeing the budget, budget planning, and financial performance of the Press.
• Developing relationships with donors to generate an endowment for the Press and funding for particular projects.
• Overseeing marketing of BUP books and determining print and digital advertising policy and choices, as well as BUP presence on campus.
• Collaborating with designers and overseeing the design work undertaken by BUP.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree
• 5 years of experience in scholarly publishing
• Proven track record of applying good judgment and business practice to a publishing program
• Budget management and project management experience
• Experience in pursuing and selecting manuscripts for evaluation
• Experience in fund raising and proposal writing
• Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with partners across institutions, departments, and individuals in an academic setting
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Prior supervisory experience
• Specialization in humanities or qualitative social sciences fields

Preferred Qualifications:
• Post-baccalaureate degree
• 7-10 years of experience in scholarly publishing

The Community
