Salary Range: CSU Salary Range: $4,107 - $7,214 per month (Anticipated Salary Range: $4,500 - $6,000 per month)

Position Description:
This position operates with independence and autonomy within broadly defined organizational goals and objectives established in collaboration with the Department Chair. Employing an in-depth, advanced knowledge of the principles and operation of a variety of specialized scientific instrumentation and other complex equipment, the incumbent has the authority to initiate and define work priorities and assignments. The position exercises independent judgment, discretion, ingenuity, and innovation to resolve complex technical problems; provides substantive input to department regarding their acquisition of equipment, and additional resources; manages service contracts, and provides the leadership necessary to streamline and maintain effective laboratory operations. The incumbent has authority to research, plan, manage, and reconcile purchases and budget for the position and has authority to make purchases up to $10,000. The incumbent hires and manages student assistants related to the position and trains and advises student technicians hired by the department. The position also requires a comprehensive understanding of and involvement with Department safety policies and guidelines, performing upgrades, retrofits, inspections, and improvements in consultation with faculty, the Department Chair, and the Department Safety Committee.

This position provides technical support in the following areas: Design, prototype, and manufacture complex electro-mechanical equipment or instrumentation to meet special needs and requirements for instruction, research, or individual projects. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of assigned equipment design, fabrication, and construction for unique, highly technical and prototype equipment or systems. In addition to developing and maintaining complex equipment, develops plans, methods, and techniques for analyzing the location and extent of a malfunction. This position requires the independent application of knowledge of equipment design principles and extensive practical experience. The incumbent also assists students with design and senior projects.

In addition, this position is responsible for all aspects of assigned electro-mechanical equipment design, construction, maintenance, and repair for both traditional manufacturing equipment and highly technical and prototype systems. The scope of existing equipment includes: Electronics Manufacturing (silkscreen, solder/reflow, pick & place), Materials Joining (welding), Materials Removal (Machining), Net Shape (Foundry and molding), Metrology (traditional contact, touch-probe, vision, optical, laser), and Advanced Manufacturing (CAD/CAM-CNC, Laser, Additive, etc). The incumbent is responsible for the design, prototyping, repair and maintenance of the basic manufacturing equipment used in the classroom on a day-to-day basis for a department of 500+ students (i.e. mills, lathes, saws, shears, presses, welders, grinders).

    Education and Experience:
  • Three years of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of electronic equipment or closely related experience. (Two years of semi-skilled experience in maintenance and repair of scientific/technical equipment or related equipment experiences as part of instructional support activities, or two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in electronic equipment repair, or completion of full military specialization in electronic equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.)
    Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.


  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Expert-level design, fabrication, and construction of advanced lab equipment used in delivering courses, and graduate and undergraduate research projects.
    2. Responsible for the design, fabrication and enhancements of complex, prototype, and highly unique equipment to support special research activities and advanced student projects.
    3. Learn and utilize new software related to the design, inspection, and other functions related to machine control.
    4. Work closely with students, faculty, and staff to repair and/or maintain complex manufacturing equipment such as mills, lathes, molding machines, printed circuit board drill and surface grinder; using hand tools, power tools and equipment associated with the machinist trade.
    5. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of assigned equipment design, fabrication, and construction for unique, highly technical and prototype equipment or systems.
    6. This position requires the independent application of knowledge of equipment design principles and extensive practical experience.
    7. Design, build, modify, and install tools to use with lathes, mills, grinders, etc.
    8. Troubleshoot and repair equipment: develop plans, methods, and techniques for analyzing the location and extent of a malfunction.
    9. Perform skilled maintenance and repair as well as train students and faculty on complex, specialty equipment such as laser cutters, coordinate measuring machines, optical and machine vision inspection systems, multi-axis CNC machines, electronic silk screen, wire bonding, and robotic placement machines, automated probing systems, and other automated custom equipment.
    10. Work closely with students, faculty, and staff to design, fabricate, install, and develop prototype, unique equipment and tooling used in advanced student projects and faculty research.
    11. Write and implement CNC code using programmable language.
    12. Expertly assemble, modify, and install wide variety of machine tools, electronic and electrical devices, welding machines, CNC cutting machines, and CNC machine tools (lathes, mills, etc.)
    13. Work with other high-level technicians with major overhaul and design of equipment.
    14. Plan and implement major laboratory renovations and layout modifications.
    15. Order parts and supplies as needed for equipment maintenance and repairs. Assists and makes recommendation to instructors for teaching aids and technical apparatus for use in the laboratory or classroom.

    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
    • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
    • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • Non-statutory supervisor/lead as defined by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA).
    • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
