Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred, but not required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
2 years of experience in academic accounting, purchasing and/or research administration environment is strongly preferred.

Preferred experience in the following:
General knowledge of University, State, Federal and/or Non-federal government accounting.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills as well as ability to independently determine priorities and to interpret and analyze financial data.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and willingness to learn and adapt to new systems.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
Strong working knowledge of computer applications required.
Knowledge of University's Shared Financial System and WISDM/WISER electronic reporting system.
Knowledge of UW research internal systems: WISPER, ECRT, Cayuse, Current/pending support tool, Conflict of Interest tracking tool; and external systems: Grants.gov, NSF Fastlane, ProposalCentral, NIH eRA Commons.
Ability to multi-task to support multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.

Position Summary:
This position provides professional level support to the centralized Business Office and Research Administration in the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). Function independently and perform highly responsible professional accounting requiring the knowledge and application of accounting theories and principles for the University of Wisconsin and the SVM. This position involves a broad variety of complex fiscal management and accounting activities including: interpreting fund requirements and deadlines and ensuring proposed budgets and expenditures are in line with these requirements; recommending action on various accounting questions; serving as business operations resource for State, University and School policy development, interpretation and implementation.

The School consists of 4 academic departments (basic science and clinical), the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Care (UWVC) teaching hospital, complex animal research and teaching facilities, and several auxiliary and chargeback units supporting research and teaching activities. In FY18, the School expenditures exceeded $70 million and included funds 101, 131, 133, 135, 136, 142, 144, 145, 150, 161, 233, and 403. Requires knowledge of School, University and State purchasing and accounting policies and procedures, as well as all granting agency guidelines and regulations. This position will be critical in assisting the SVM with tasks related to a growing research enterprise (58% increased portfolio in five years - 2012-2017). Flexibility will be needed in order to respond to specific needs of the SVM Business Office and Research Administration and duties and percentages may change as the position evolves. Duties are performed under general supervision
