Position Description:
Reporting directly to the Aerospace Engineering Department Chair, this position independently provides technical support for local area networks (LANs) and labs with computers for the Aerospace Engineering & Materials Engineering Departments. This would include analyzing requirements, planning, design, implementation and maintenance of LANs. This position is responsible for providing general PC support, such as evaluation of new products, supporting a variety of Linux, OS X, and Windows computers used throughout the departments, analyzing user needs and making procurement recommendations, installing hardware/software, troubleshooting PC problems, training on application software and preparing user documentation. Additionally, this position supports the college's VDI system as needed to meet the evolving needs of these departments.

Incumbents at the Career level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems-and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree and two years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis).


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Thorough knowledge of the operation, functions and specifications of a diverse set of computing equipment, and the principles of local area networks for the integration of computers and peripherals.
    2. Thorough knowledge of installation procedures, operating procedures, and administration procedures for all department platform operating systems including, but not limited to, MS-DOS, Windows, Windows Server, Linux, and Mac.
    3. Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate security is maintained.
    4. Excellent problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to maintain and repair computer, media, video production equipment and systems. Ability to diagnose equipment and/or system failures and perform corrective action as needed. Ability to reconfigure and test newly installed systems.
    5. Thorough knowledge of LAN based networking, planning, implementation, and maintenance, network/workstations, active directory, disk imaging tools, interface network cabling/termination, installation, network HUBS, repeaters, switches, and network cabling/termination. Network workstation applications include: Internet Explorer, Firefox, SSH/SFTP, FTP/TELNET applications, as well as other compliant applications.
    6. Thorough knowledge of workstation LAN based networking protocols. Protocols Include: TCP/IP, NetBEUI/NetBIOS, IPX/SPX, SMTP, HTTP, RPC, TFTP, bootp, DNS, WINS, ARP, RARP, SLIP, PPP.
    7. Ability to successfully assign tasks, provide work direction, training, and guidance to others.
    8. Ability to communicate effectively in a clear and understandable manner, both orally and in writing. Ability to communicate at a technical level with vendors to coordinate acquisition, repair, and maintenance contracts and to maintain licensing agreements.
    9. Ability to plan, estimate and implement system/equipment upgrades including preparing recommendations and cost justification for equipment and materials purchases.
    10. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects. Demonstrated ability to provide technical coordination and track projects in a continually changing environment.
    11. Demonstrated ability to perform timely and accurate data entry, maintain equipment and software inventories, repair logs, work orders and other records. Demonstrated ability to maintain organized and functional workspaces.
    12. Thorough knowledge of requirements for accessibility compliance.
    13. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    14. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    15. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    16. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    17. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
    • Experience maintaining HPC systems.

    Special Conditions:
    ***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***

    • Must be able to perform physical installation (e.g. climbing ladders, lifting, and moving) of wiring, cables, equipment, computers and peripheral equipment.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours on occasion (e.g. evenings and weekends) so as to minimize disruption to user operations to accommodate hardware and software installations and maintenance in the event of a computer-related emergency.
    • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
    • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
    • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
