The Manager of Editorial Services is responsible for day-to day editorial and strategic direction of all divisional writing projects with emphases on alumni engagement, development and stewardship writing, donor publicity, social media and event support as well as management of publications and select divisional initiatives. This position is part of the Advancement Communications staff within the Division of University Advancement and reports to the Director of Editorial and Creative Services of Advancement Communications, Marketing and Events.

Duties/Physical Demands:

  • Manages copywriting staff, freelancers and interns for the Division of University Advancement, serving the areas of alumni relations, development, stewardship, and donor relations
  • Under direction of Director, oversees the day-to-day use and strategy of University Advancement voice, tone and brand language
  • Under direction of Director, researches, writes and edits features, proposals, concept documents, case statements, press releases and other long-form divisional writing projects
  • Provide day-to-day project oversight for all writing and editing projects
  • Serves as a key member on the Editorial and Creative Services team within University Advancement, providing recommendations for Editorial strategy and implementation;
  • Conducts interviews, gathers information and performs background research as needed to carry out writing and project tasks
  • Creates, adheres to and manages timelines to ensure that deadlines are met to deliver high-quality finished writing projects
  • Researches, interviews for, writes and edit features, proposals, press releases, video scripts and ad copy for divisional creative projects
  • Collaborates with senior administration, faculty and development staff on the crafting of proposals, concept documents and case statements promoting programs and initiatives university-wide

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communication, Journalism, Marketing or related field with at least 3 years of writing experience. A combination of education and experience (including internships, co-ops and freelance work) may be considered; 
  • Experience writing for higher education, non-profit, government and/or fundraising appeals required;
  • Knowledge of AP style required;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent editing skills, including knowledge of grammar, style and format;
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a creative team;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines;
  • Ability to manage and mentor editorial staff;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communication or a related field;
  • Knowledge of Wrike Project Management system;
  • Experience in script writing for videos and speeches;
  • Extensive editorial experience across multiple platforms;
  • Extensive knowledge of Higher Education and Alumni/Donor audiences.
