Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1. Four or more years of experience at a major educational institution with demonstrated experience working with sponsored programs administration.
2. Demonstrated management, supervision, and leadership experience in research administration.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Contracts is a key individual in providing leadership, management, and facilitation of the research enterprise at UW.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a professional, experienced, highly-organized individual with outstanding communication skills for the position of Assistant Director of Contracts in RSP. RSP reviews and negotiates contracts/agreements that provide sponsored project funding to UW faculty and staff. The review and negotiation process ensures that the interest of the PI, the University, and the State are all adequately protected and that the legal obligations of the agreement do not conflict with the University's research mission or its policies. The negotiation functions is conducted at RSP by a staff of 13 people spread across three teams. The team focuses are industrial research agreements, non-industrial research agreements, and clinical trial agreements. The Assistant Director reports to the Associated Director of Pre-Award of RSP.

The Assistant Director of Contracts of RSP will be responsible for leading and supporting the operational functions of the agreement negotiation unit, including agreement negotiations, outreach to campus, policy and practice review, inter-University collaboration on agreement issues, and relations with third parties regarding agreement negotiation. As delegated by the Associate Director of Pre-Award, this position will provide leadership to the University on contract negotiation and will establish policies and procedures relating to RSP and the University's management of research.
