BOOKSELLER, MIT Press (part-time, 21 hrs/wk.), to perform complex customer service, sales, merchandising, and clerical duties in a fast-paced retail environment. Responsibilities include responding to client inquiries on the sales floor and via telephone and email; providing direct sales assistance to customers regarding the books published by the Press and its publishing disciplines; processing sales via cash register; ordering, shipping, and receiving inventory; stocking and merchandising shelves; providing general clerical support; representing the bookstore at off-site events; and other duties as needed.

The MIT Press Bookstore functions as a showroom for the MIT Press and provides a range of retail services to both the MIT community and the public-at-large, with a specific emphasis on scholarly and academic publishing.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: a high school diploma or its equivalent; a minimum of one year of bookstore or related retail experience; experience working as part of a retail team in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment; strong interpersonal and customer service skills and ease with telephone, email, and in-person communication; and attention to detail. Must be able to juggle multiple priorities despite frequent interruptions, work independently, handle confidential financial information, interpret store policies using discretion and judgment, and lift boxes weighing up to 30 lbs. Familiarity with the Press's publications and the Institute helpful, as is an active interest in scholarly or nonfiction publishing. A basic understanding of the Press's scholarly disciplines (e.g., computer science, neuroscience, linguistics, etc.) would be useful. Bookstore hours: M-F, 9:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.; weekends, 12:00 - 6:00 P.M.

Must be flexible about scheduling and able to work evening and occasional weekend hours.
