Collections Specialist

Salary Range: $3,091/month - $5,272/month

About the Position

Under the general supervision of the Collection Manager, the Collection Specialist is responsible for the collection of debts owed to the university by students, former students, vendors, or outside agencies.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Collection of PS aging, Perkins, Dream and Kuhlman Loan receivables: Resolve delinquent Perkins Loans, Kuhlman Loans, and Aged Receivables. Perform enrollment cancellation, conduct entrance interviews, prepare and conduct exit interviews, refer uncollectible accounts either for write-off or to the Department of Education, send monthly past due messages, and perform other duties as assigned.

Customer Focus and Support: Communicates with students, external organizations, and other outside vendors to resolve delinquent debts. Performs collection activities with a focus on customer needs, provides quality standards for services, and strives to exceed the customer's expectations. review emergency loan applications

Complete Special Projects:
Update the procedures manual, reconcile the collection agency statements for Perkins and Kuhlman Loans, create monthly Collection Management Report, and monitor new loans and advance report to ECSI.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to three years of increasingly responsible financial record-keep experience, including two years in collections, lending or a related area or any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

- BS or BA
- Experience: Experience in CSU policy and procedures
- Experience working with PeopleSoft
- Experience working with Heartland ECSI
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience working in a high volume setting providing excellent customer service and/or advising in higher education
- Experience involving data review and analysis in a fast paced environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling.
Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
Strong oral communication skills.
Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
Ability to cope with stress in an appropriate manner.
