PT Hourly POOL - Groundskeeping


Definition
NOTE: This is an hourly position.

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of work involving grounds and landscape maintenance of the Horticulture garden, and any other required grounds or venues. Works primarily as skilled crew member but on small assignments may work independently with little or no direction.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Maintain specialized instruments and equipment in good condition.
  2. Maintain Arboretum and Garden Labs: transplant, water, tip, prune and monitor for pests/diseases.
  3. Maintenance of landscape: mows, edges, aerates and re-seeds lawns and grounds. Trims shrubs, hedges, and trees. Hoes weeds and rakes lawns.
  4. Assist with maintenance, repair, replacement and upgrading of irrigation components such as but not limited to sprinkler heads and lines. Digs trenches, unloads and relocates materials, and cleans tools and equipment.
  5. Plant and cultivate trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs, and apply fertilizer as needed.
  6. Spade and otherwise prepares grounds for planting.
  7. Perform other related work as required.

Qualifications and Physical Demands
Knowledge of :
  1. Basic knowledge of plants and plant types used for beautification.
  2. Working knowledge of the procedures methods, techniques, and equipment used in grounds and landscape maintenance.
  3. Basic knowledge of routine maintenance to sprinkler and irrigation systems.
  4. Knowledge of the procedures used in the proper application of fertilizers and other additives.
  5. Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the assigned learning laboratory.
  6. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  7. Sufficient Math skills to calculate weights, proportions, and sums.
Ability to :
1. Learn and perform the essential duties of the position.
2. Plant, cultivate, prune, and care for plants and lawns.
3. Learn and apply herbicides safely.
4. Properly set up, operate and demonstrate the correct operation/handling of tools, materials and equipment used in the assigned learning lab.
5. Identify common turf and other plant diseases and pests and take steps to mitigate or eradicate.
6. Perform basic college level work in the assigned academic field.
7. Perform basic math.
8. Stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards uninterrupted, and manipulate (lift, carry move) light to heavy weights up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
9. Push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds.
10. Climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis.
11. Sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate common grounds equipment.
12. Maintain simple records.
13. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices may be required.
14. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
15. Organize work to meet timelines and deadlines.
16. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Education and Experience:
34. High School Diploma
35. Two years of experience in grounds and landscape.
36. Completed coursework in Horticulture desired.
37. Or, any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required
knowledge and abilities.

LICENSES OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions in this classification may require a valid California driver's license and/or possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited college or agency relative to the assigned area. Continuing education, training or certification may be required.

Conditions of Employment
Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked and are limited to 28 hours per week.

This is a short-term, CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. We accept applications all year long. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file, as needed, to fill temporary assignments.

The normal hours of work will be based on the needs of the department, Monday through Friday. However, some flexibility such as evenings and week-ends will be required to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
