The Westerly Sun, a digital-focused daily news operation covering six towns in southwestern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut, is seeking a creative and energetic news editor to work with our editor to take us to the next level and manage all aspects of our news-gathering operation, including daily story mix, a staff of six reporters, a photographer and several freelance reporters and photographers. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, an obsessive attention to detail and organization, a mastery of AP style, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and a strong willingness to work in a team-focused environment. Our fast-paced newsroom includes a diverse mix of news, features, entertainment and community news. Special duties include managing team election coverage, special series, enterprise and investigative reporting, video and audio storytelling and social media channels.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with print and web content-management systems, Google Docs and Google Spreadsheets, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier, and all relevant social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. The news editor job also requires running a weekly staff meeting and providing regular feedback to all writers and contributors, as well as managing a departmental budget. Occasionally, the news editor will be expected to represent The Sun at community events.
