Advanced Practice Psychiatric Provider

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary:

The psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatric physician assistant is responsible for providing mental health care services to the college student population under the direction of a board certified psychiatrist. This position will provide aspects of mental health care and medical management within the standards of the profession and works with counseling professionals and health center professionals to provide timely and professional care to students.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Provides direct patient care by managing mental health problems encountered in a college health center and in consultation with physician as needed.

Promotes knowledge of mental health and wellness by counseling patients on treatment plan, use of medications, and the necessity for follow-up visits; serving on University committees as a resource and participating in health promotion.

Provides accurate documentation in accordance with Brown Lupton Health Center's medical record and/or TCU Counseling Center Records.

Maintains staff confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; maintaining national certification

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Required Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in nursing (MSN, MS) with formal preparation in the advanced practice role (PMHNP) or Master's degree in physician assistant studies
  • 2 years of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Physician Assistant


Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification
  • Hold a valid Texas license from the Texas Board of Nursing or the Texas Medical Board
  • National certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and recognition as advanced practice nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Current prescriptive authority from the Texas Board of Nursing or the Texas Medical Board

  • Knowledge to assess patients

  • Knowledge to act as patient advocate
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques
  • Skill to screen and triage mental health patients
  • Skill to implement patient care
  • Ability to provide prompt and effectual emergency care
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and charts
  • Ability to assist the Health Care team in providing mental health services to the college age patient
  • Ability to function as a health care team member
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing


Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.


Work Environment:
  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
