Position Description:
The Facilities Management and Development (FMD) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management and development of facilities on the university campus. The Plumber works within the Plumbing Shop of the Facilities Operations Department of FMD which is responsible for providing quality maintenance and minor repair and renovation services that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. This purpose of the Plumbing Shop is to install and maintain the plumbing systems on campus, including but not limited to water mains, sewer mains, storm drains; gas mains, reservoirs, and all types of plumbing fixtures.

Under general supervision, the Plumber performs the full range of skilled journey-level plumbing work including the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration-related plumbing systems, including automated plumbing systems.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber's apprenticeship program.


Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade including a general knowledge of the operation of building automation systems.
  • Through knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trades, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.
  • Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems, including applicable welding work.
  • Ability to obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses.
  • Ability to make rough sketches of plumbing installations, and read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to estimate materials and labor costs of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications, and make rough sketches.
  • Ability to estimate cost, time and materials of mechanical work.
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Possess base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems.
  • Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic functions at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and dependable manner, as well as establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism in entering occupied areas including student residential halls, faculty and staff offices and other university space.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

  • Work may involve working in and around confined spaces such as manholes, trenches and building crawl spaces.
  • Work may involve working with human waste and fluids, and other hazardous materials.
  • Ability to work on and climb ladders/stairs, carry up to 50 lbs., squat, kneel, and crawl.
  • Ability to work in high lift equipment and operate a forklift, sewer equipment, pipe machine, and water jetting equipment.
  • Ability to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment the position is required to maintain and operate.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday (40 hour work week) and travel occasionally to attend meetings, conferences and seminars.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. Must be able to respond in a timely matter whether they are able to return or not.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter'. under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Non Exempt" and is therefore subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
