Position Description:
Under the general supervision of the Director of University Accounting & Reporting, the Accountant

I will provide professional level, cross-functional accounting support that is analytical, evaluative, and

advisory in nature for University Accounting and Reporting (UAR) Department. This includes

providing a wide variety of centralized accounting services and applying accounting profession

principles and practices, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), in classifying,

examining, analyzing, reconciling, and reporting financial transactions. The incumbent will ensure

compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations between entities, programs and funds. These

responsibilities include supporting the University's internal control, tax and audit functions; system

processing and maintenance of associated administrative systems; implementing appropriate fiscal

policies and procedures; providing guidance in fiscal matters relative to the areas of responsibility;

participation in CSU systemwide policy and procedure development and/or interpretation and

implementation; and involvement with various CSU committees or representing the University on

various accounting matters.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree with a major in accounting, business administration, or a closely related field. (Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge and abilities, may be substituted for the required education)


    Required Qualifications:
    1. General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); office methods and
    procedures; statistical and mathematical presentation of data; and advanced proficiency with
    integrated financial systems and other types of records management systems.
    2. Ability to interpret and follow instructions and policy guidelines.
    3. Understand and the ability to apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
    accounting processes transactions and documentation relative to assigned area of responsibility.
    4. Ability to examine financial documents for completeness, accuracy and conformance with
    established policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting standards.
    5. Ability to assemble and compile data used in the preparation of routine trial balances, financial
    statements and reports with information from a variety of sources, and investigate and resolve
    errors and discrepancies.
    6. Ability to enter data into the computer, post information to journals, registers and ledgers, and
    review computer output for accuracy.
    7. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive,
    cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to
    establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those
    from various cultural backgrounds.
    8. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and
    understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    9. Ability to interpret, communicate and provide guidance of policies and procedures or convey
    technical information in an understandable manner to campus constituents.
    10. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    11. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently set own
    priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating, critical and time-sensitive
    deadlines.
    12. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including
    integrated accounting systems, word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems,
    Internet as well as online calendaring and email.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented
    and service-centered attitude.
  • General knowledge of PeopleSoft Finance and GL modules and the effect and outcome ofoperations performed.
  • Expert proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
    • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment."
