Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer

University of Virginia Health System

Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer

The University of Virginia Health System seeks nominations and applications for the newly created position of Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer (CIWO). Reporting to the Executive Vice President for the Health System, she/he will be a central figure on the leadership team. The CIWO, in collaboration with a strong team, will have a rare opportunity to have significant influence on the culture and have a lasting impact on future generations of faculty, staff, and students.

The Health System is comprised of the UVA Medical Center, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Health Sciences Library, and UVA Physicians’ Group. The system also operates several regional clinical programs throughout Virginia. In the past five years the Health System has come together under a new organizational structure headed by new leadership: Richard P. Shannon, UVA Executive Vice President for Health Affairs; Pamela Sutton-Wallace, Chief Executive Officer, UVA Medical Center; and David S. Wilkes, Dean, UVA School of Medicine.

As these new leaders built their teams, they recognized diversity as a needed component. In order to create a climate of inclusion and to ensure organizational wellness is at the highest level, they jointly proposed the new position of Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer. This is a community where members are valued, respected and supported. We are seeking a leader and expert in their field to make us a better version of ourselves. This important new position will span the Health System and bring together existing programs and people as well as be the visionary for the future organization.

The Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer reports to the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Dr. Richard P. Shannon, with dotted-line reporting relationships to the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center. Dr. Shannon reports to the President of the University and has responsibility for all Health System entities.

The Chief Inclusion and Wellness Officer will partner with executive leadership in the Health System to plan, strategize, and implement programs promoting the institutional values of inclusion, wellness, and respectfulness. The CIWO will be the subject matter specialist and serve as a change management expert to enhance the culture of inclusion and wellness appreciation throughout the health system.

The Health System has retained UVA’s Executive Search Group to assist in this search.
