Career Counselor, Career Services Center

PAY GRADE: 29E

CONTEXT OF JOB:

The Career Services Center (CSC) at the University of Delaware has an opening for a creative and impactful Career Counselor to join our team. The CSC is a highly dynamic team committed to empowering all students to develop and achieve their professional aspirations.

Within the context of two teams, Counseling and Programming (CPT) and Employer Relations (ERT), professional staff engage alumni, parents, faculty, administrators and employers to facilitate students' transition from college to career. The successful candidate will have a keen understanding of career development and student learning and demonstrated skills counseling students and alumni. They should also possess a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as be able to engage stakeholders through effective communications and highly effective programming.

THE ROLE

Under the general direction of an Assistant Director on the Counseling and Programming Team, the Career Counselor is responsible for the creation and application of career related services and programs for students and alumni through the CSC's career community model. The Career Counselor will provide quality career counseling and coaching, influenced by career development theory and guided by the CSC's service delivery model. Further, the MBTI and SII, as well as other career assessments, will be utilized by the Career Counselor to help students assess personality, interests, skills and values. Additionally, the Career Counselor will conduct and manage workshops, presentations and programs, build liaison relationships and partnerships with academic and administrative departments, engage employers and professionals, conduct benchmarking and best practices research, serve on cross-functional center teams, and assist with strategic planning initiatives.



PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



Undergraduate, graduate, and alumni individual counseling (30%)
  • Counsel students and alumni regarding career decision-making, assessment and the graduate school process. Work with students and alumni in developing and enhancing professional skills related to the internship and job search processes, including resume writing, interviewing and networking.
  • Administer and interpret self-assessment instruments with students and alumni.



Career Community Programming & Engagement (30%)
  • Serve as the liaison for their assigned career community, responsible for the application of career-related services and programs.
  • Collaborate with their community ERT representative to develop connections with employers and alum for events, advertising, and center resources.
  • Participate in professional development around industry community to keep abreast of industry trends.
  • Establish new and enhance existing relationships with advisors and faculty in their assigned career community.
  • Participate in the planning of annual career community events such as industry-related Meet-Ups and bus trips.
  • Seek out, enhance, and update resources and materials related to career community-based industry trends and feedback from major stakeholders.
  • Maintain and develop partnerships with student organization leaders, delivering career-related programs to organization members and securing co-sponsorship of major career-related events; develop and implement effective ways to promote Career Services among student organizations.
  • Design, develop, schedule and conduct presentations on career development and professional development competencies, presenting to university classes and other university departments.



University Wide Programming & Engagement (25%)
  • Act as the liaison for Division of Student Life units to deliver career-related programs and initiatives.
  • Act as the university liaison for career programming and resources as a member other designated teams as needed.
  • Serve on university committees and provide CSC representation.



CSC Administrative Responsibilities (15%)
  • Collaborate with CSC team members to find new and innovative ways of delivering career services through social media, virtual workshops and one-on-one counseling interactions.
  • Review all career resources and provide appropriate referrals and recommendations.
  • Develop social media content relating to career community students and coordinate efforts with the Assistant Director, Communications and Operations.
  • Perform other job-related duties assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Master's degree and one to three years of experience in career development, counseling or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a higher education setting and using assessment tools including the SII and MBTI are preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community are required.
  • Strong ability to internally and externally collaborate with faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Proven record of assessing and interpreting individual client needs and making appropriate referrals to internal or external sources.
  • Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, managing and prioritizing many projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
