Sr Facilities Automation Systems Engineer

The Department of A&F Utilities Distribution Operations at the University of Cincinnati provides utilities for over 100 buildings and over12 million gross square feet. Our Utilities Department has two plants on campus that provide electric, steam, and chilled water service to the University, local hospitals and surrounding areas. The plants burn a variety of fuels to ensure our reliability and cost effectiveness. Our staff is trained to efficiently operate and maintain the facilities and equipment, resulting in dependable utilities every day of the year.

The University of Cincinnati is currently seeking a Senior Facilities Automation Systems Engineer who will, under general supervision from a designated administrator, be responsible for medium and high voltage power systems and equipment, including maintenance and operations. The selected candidate will be responsible for the engineering and integration of automation systems, as well operations, maintenance and upgrades to campus wide controls systems to provide efficient and reliable production and distribution of energies throughout the University.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Work closely with Utilities personnel to develop, implement, and oversee medium and high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Manage contractor personnel working on medium and high voltage power plant and substation electrical equipment.
  • Work closely with Duke Energy personnel and electrical contractors to effectively maintain electrical distribution equipment across campus.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and/or modify IT equipment /systems that interface with current systems.
  • Develop and implement projects to upgrade and modify hardware and software in support of operational power generation equipment requirements.
  • Provide maintenance and troubleshooting support on electrical and energy control systems throughout Utility Power Plants.
  • Coordinate the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical system devices.
  • Work closely with Utilities, Facilities, and Campus building personnel to monitor energy utilization activities across campus.
  • Develop and implement energy savings and efficiency processes and equipment to support University cost and energy usage reduction initiatives.
  • Work with campus building personnel to troubleshoot, identify, and repair equipment related problems.
  • Design, develop, and work with University personnel to implement projects to reduce energy consumption in buildings.
  • Manage special projects as assigned and ensure project completion on schedule, under budget, and to customer expectations.
  • Provide direct supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff as necessary to support plant and campus maintenance activities.
  • Perform related or less skilled duties based on departmental need.


Unusual working conditions may include: May be exposed to dirt, fumes, noise, heights, confined spaces, and high energy equipment; may be exposed to high temperatures, steam or hot water.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with five (5) years' experience; -OR- Associate's degree with seven (7) years' experience; -OR- nine (9) years' experience. Experience must include at least three (3) years supervisory experience.
