Salary Range: Salary Range: $3,515 - $5,818 per month (Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,800 - $4,800 per month)

Position Description:
Under supervision of the Director of Marketing & Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist works to promote the College of Engineering's reputation and programs to a state, national, and worldwide audience; and develop and enhance relationships between the college and its key constituent groups, including students, parents, alumni, friends and donors, via digital communication methods. In collaboration with the Director of Marketing & Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist will maximize the college's online presence, providing information about the college's departments, programs and activities through the college and department websites, social media and other digital communications.

This position will work with Marketing and Communication to migrate the current website from a tailored CMS site to Cal Poly's ITS supported system, Drupal. This position works with the internal college and university communities and in close collaboration with the College of Engineering, University Development, Annual Giving, University Marketing, and University Communications. Under the direction of the Director of Marketing & Communication, the Digital Communications Specialist will work collaboratively with University Marketing to ensure that university-wide standards, branding and messaging are followed. In addition, this position will also participate in the development and execution of communications strategic plans and policies.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's degree and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field.


Required Qualifications:
  1. Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats and ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
  2. Working knowledge of current and emerging communication and branding strategies, principles, and techniques to promote and position the college.
  3. Demonstrated ability to execute effective social media campaigns on multiple platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram.
  4. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain websites utilizing HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and content management systems, preferably Drupal.
  5. Ability to quickly troubleshoot issues and implement long-term solutions through collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team, campus IT, department staff/faculty, and other key constituents.
  6. Excellent skills with a variety of general and specialized software applications including word processing, desktop publishing, photo editing, and communication software.
  7. Working knowledge of journalistic interview and research techniques and methods.
  8. Excellent story development, journalistic writing, and editorial skills.
  9. Demonstrated ability to review and evaluate graphic design for quality, currency and brand alignment.
  10. Knowledge of applicable laws pertaining to written and electronic materials, confidentiality, and news media, including libel/slander, copyright, and privacy laws.
  11. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  12. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills; expertise in working effectively and creatively with diverse individuals and groups.
  13. Ability to train and provide lead work direction.
  14. Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of ethical conduct and confidentiality in dealing with internal and external constituencies.
  15. Excellent organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to set own priorities and effectively plan, coordinate, prioritize, take direction, and execute multiple projects and meet established, as well as fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  16. Ability to analyze situations, apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and creative solutions.
  17. Ability to analyze relevant data, interpret trends and develop strategies with strong data-support.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience in web design and maintenance that meets ADA requirements to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
  2. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  3. Knowledge of web development programming languages such as Javascript and PHP.
  4. Knowledge of video production and editing, including working knowledge of Final Cut Pro, Avid and/or Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as postproduction software such as After Effects, Audition and Photoshop.
  5. Ability to process media-quality digital photos for web and print.
  6. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Special Conditions:

  • Must be able to sit in front of a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs (i.e. publication deadlines, CENG events, or meetings). May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
