Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Degree and area of specialization:
Advanced degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science or related field is required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Two or more years of laboratory experience working with complex analytical instruments, including significant design, building, maintenance, and repair responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will have experience and/or the ability to develop prototype electronic circuits required for instrumentation innovations in analytical instruments, including circuit board layout and fabrication, soldering, cable construction, and enclosure adaptation. In addition, experience in software-instrument interfaces, familiarity with LabView, C++, Python and other programming languages is also desired. Applicants should also have experience using 3D CAD drawings, such as AutoCAD 3D or Solid Works.

Problem solving skills, strong leadership and organizational skills are a must. This position also requires strong written and oral communication skills.

Position Summary:
The Instrumentation Technologist will provide electronics support for the research, instructional, and outreach programs in the UW-Madison Department of Chemistry. This person will help create a newly designed Instrument Design Lab and then manage the electronics area within this lab. This position will support faculty, staff, and students by designing, constructing, testing, improving and repairing specialized research instrumentation. Working closely with departmental engineers, machinists, and glass blower, this person will provide an integrated approach to instruments design. The person filling this position will also develop and offer training on software-instrument interfacing, printed circuit board layout, soldering, and electronics construction techniques.
