Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of a police sergeant is line supervision and administration of programs. This position is under the general supervision of a Police Lieutenant or Police Captain. This position is responsible for the safety and security, on all University properties, of all staff, students and the general public. This position is responsible for implementing all departmental written directives and meeting established goals. This position is responsible for leading, directing, supervising, and training Department personnel. This position works independently on matters of resource allocation, investigative management, scheduling of department personnel, recruitment, hiring and onboarding of personnel, crime prevention programs, delivery of law enforcement services and daily administrative assignments.

This position is specifically assigned to the Investigative Services Unit. This sergeant may also be assigned as the back up to another sergeant's assigned operational area. There are specific responsibilities, duties and knowledge required of this position compared to other sergeant positions; however, this position must demonstrate the general abilities and responsibilities such as leadership, problem solving, planning, communication, and law enforcement service that apply to all areas sergeants are assigned.

This sergeant has the responsibility for providing supervisory reports regarding Investigative Services; ensuring compliance with mandates; leading, managing and supervising the personnel assigned to Investigative Services; establishing goals; creating and communicating written directives and guidelines; creating and engaging and inclusive work environment; responding to and managing incidents, events and emergencies; providing leadership department-wide; planning and preparation for incidents, events and emergencies; building relationships with staff, key partners, other entities and the community; and providing for the safety and security of the campus.

Persons in this position must pass the initial application screening, all steps of the hiring process, an extensive background investigation (including past employment, reference checks, social media check (does not require you to disclose any passwords) and credit history) drug screen, physical and psychological examination prior to beginning employment. Persons in this position must obtain or possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License. Persons in this position are expected to dress in duty uniform, appropriate business or business casual attire.

Discretion and Accountability
This position has delegated authority from the Chief of Police to exercise broad discretion in setting objectives and priorities for the Department. This position is accountable for being a business partner with leadership/management of the University to meet the mission of the Department and the University in a safe and effective manner. In the event of an emergency, this position will be called upon to be able to react quickly by evaluating the situation, the emergency plans, etc. in order to act on behalf of the Department to provide direction about what needs to be done, where people should go, etc. This position is responsible for resolving emergency situations as quickly and safely as possible while effectively dealing with issues that may arise during the emergency.

Physical Effort
Persons in this position need to maintain a level of physical ability to exert significant physical effort at any time. This may include the need to be able to lift or drag a person, run for short distances and overcome significant physical resistance from another person. Persons in the position must have good vision and hearing to carry out basic law enforcement duties. In times of Department need, including disasters, emergencies and events, persons in this position may be required to work long hours (12-24 or more hours at a stretch) under stressful conditions with a limited number of off-duty breaks of short durations.

Work Environment
Many times difficult decisions, impacting upon the possible loss of life, damage to property, labor relations or work stoppage issues, and tort and legal liability must be made. In those times, those work objectives must be completed with a minimum of delay, sometimes within very short time frames. This position could potentially work in very dangerous situations or buildings, inclement weather, potential chemical hazards, etc.


Schedule Comment:
This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The final schedule worked will be discussed and agreed upon with UWPD management. This position generally has a Monday-Friday schedule during general business hours; however work hours will need to meet the needs of the UWPD. Routinely persons in this position will be required to work beyond or outside hours agreed upon may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned. This position will also be required to serve in a weekly on-call status on a rotating basis with other staff from the Investigative Services Unit.

In your list include: type of case, brief description of the case, how many victims, witnesses, suspects or others you interviewed, search warrant or subpoenas obtained, types of evidence you collected, any coordination with other agencies or entities, case outcome and how long it took to investigate. Be prepared to provide appropriately redacted copies of your reports upon request.

Minimum Qualifications To Apply:

Five (5) or more years of experience as a sworn police officer or detective/investigator.

Current Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification or have been Wisconsin Law Enforcement certified within the past two years.

Meet all UW Risk Management criteria to operate university vehicles (no more than two moving violations, operating after revocation or suspension, or operating without a valid driver's license within the two years and/or have more than six demerit points assessed on his or her driver's license and have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License upon appointment).

Must not have any unpardoned felony convictions, any domestic violence convictions, any other criminal convictions within the past five years, convictions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in the past five years.

Process Timeline: The process will consist of an initial interview for selected qualified candidates, written essay questions and answers, interview with the Chief(s), and an in-depth background check. Ideally the candidate selected will start employment in April 2018 (exact date to be determined).
