Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering or closely related field is required. Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Required:
-Fluent in one or more programming languages.
-Strong problem solving skills.
-Self-motivated and self-directed.
-Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience working with Microsoft Azure's cloud hosting platform.
-Training and or/experience in machine learning, data science, statistics, and/or data visualization.
-Proficiency in C#, web-based programming languages (i.e., JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc.), and a statistical computing language/package (i.e., R, SAS, MATLAB, etc.).
-Experience working with quantitative biological data and/or mass spectrometry data.

Position Summary:
At Coon Laboratories, located within the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Morgridge Institute for Research, we employ cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS) technology to study complex biological systems. We are routinely using the most advanced proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic profiling techniques to address some of the most challenging biological problems of the day. As mass spectrometers have gotten faster and more sensitive, we find ourselves entering the era of big data. We are seeking highly-motivated data scientists to join our team and apply their unique talents in creative ways to help dig deeper into large MS datasets.

Persons hired for the position of Research Data Scientist will develop web-based tools to integrate and disseminate mass spectrometry data to cross-disciplinary researchers across the world. They will be responsible for designing novel algorithms and bioinformatic processing routines to rapidly identify interesting biological features and connections within MS datasets. Persons hired into this position may also develop software solutions for converting raw MS data into condensed quantitative outputs.
