The Information Technologies Client Support & Services (IT-CSS) department at the University of Delaware seeks applicants for the IT Scientific Applications Consultant position. The Research Support group within IT Client Support & Services provides research computing support, primarily as direct user support through consulting, programming assistance and training. Through collaborations with other IT and academic units, the Research Support group also designs and implements new cyberinfrastructure to support the University's extensive and varied funded research initiatives. Research support is a key strategic and operational activity of the central IT organization and is regarded as integral to the strategic goals of the University.

The Scientific Applications Consultant will work with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, primarily but not exclusively in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, helping them to make the best possible use of UD's research computing systems and services.
The incumbent will work with researchers, educators and other team members both (a) to identify and resolve technical obstacles to the work of UD's computing-intensive and data-intensive research and education community, and (b) to facilitate the expansion of the ambition and impact of these stakeholders and their activities.

The Scientific Applications Consultant reports to the Director of IT Client Support & Services.
The Scientific Applications Consultant family is part of a career ladder. Members of the Scientific Applications Consultant family will be hired into levels that are commensurate with their experience and educational background.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates as a member of a highly technical and customer-service driven team. Readily shares knowledge and training with other staff members, and forges close working relationships with scientific research groups across campus.
- Provides end user support services to faculty, staff, and students on the use of research computing hardware and software as well as scientific applications and scientific workflows.
- Conducts investigations and tests of complex scientific software systems to enhance performance or to investigate and resolve matters of significance.
- Helps to identify and understand research and education activities that can benefit from research cyberinfrastructure, not only at UD but also at other institutions, for example at national supercomputing centers; engage users to help develop and optimize workflows that effectively and efficiently use these resources.
- Educates and trains users regarding both longstanding and new systems and services, based on extant and emerging researcher needs and user experiences, working proactively to identify and develop the research cyberinfrastructure user community and to broaden engagement across UD.
- Provides workshops and one-on-one technical assistance and training to faculty, staff and students in the use of a shared high performance computing environment and associated scientific software.
- Investigates and evaluates new technologies and techniques of importance to researchers.
- Maintains technical knowledge and keeps abreast of technical developments in area of expertise. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, systems, and applicable laws and standards. Makes recommendations for use of specific applications on campus when appropriate.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts. Acts as a technical resource for departmental IT professionals in UD units across campus. Works within the department's overall strategic plan following project priorities and scope. Meets deadlines and achieves goals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree with three years related experience or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems preferred. Experience in a University computing service environment is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability and experience with scripting and programming (e.g. Python, Perl, C, R, Julia, or Java).
- Experience with the Linux operating system and utilizing the command line interface.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative and diverse environment is required.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to accommodate various needs and work effectively with a diverse user base.
- Effective communication skills (oral, written, listening, presentation), organization, interpersonal, and customer-service skills.
- Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented.
- Aptitude for learning quickly and functioning in a dynamic technological environment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience and proficiency with high performance computing or similar area of study.
- Experience and proficiency with using one or more Unix-like operating systems, for example Linux.
- Experience with research and/or practice in one or more STEM disciplines.
