Position Summary
As one of two Associate Director positions, assists the director in the effective operation of the Department of Public Safety by managing daily operations of Public Safety and shift supervisors. Under the director's guidance, DPS will deliver safety and security services which include the development, implementation, and administration of programs that assist the campus community in maintaining order, and/or improving the personal safety of the students, faculty, staff, guests and property of the College.

Essential Functions
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
Oversees the patrol and telecommunications operations to include officers and telecommunnicators and provides direct supervision to the sergeant positions.
Schedule staff members – sergeants, officers and telecommunicators. Manage time-off requests, approve overtime and implement holiday break schedules.
Assists with security planning for events to include staffing and implementation of incident action plans.
Responds to emergency calls and investigates incidents or conducts follow up as necessary.
Hires, supervises and evaluates staff members, recommending appropriate corrective action or commendation; manages direct reports.
Oversees the investigations conducted by Public Safety and assists the Title IX Team with investigations as necessary.
Maintains a working knowledge of the card access system, monitoring systems (cameras) and alarm systems.
Participates in the development of department procedures; creates and conducts staff training.
Serves in on-call capacity to provide assistance or emergency response.
Represents the department at meetings and on committees.
Serves as a member of the Threat Assessment Management Team and the Emergency Management Team.
Maintains liaison with local and state law enforcement agencies and with emergency response agencies to ensure campus preparedness.
Approves payroll and assists with the development and management of the department budgets.
In the absence of the Director, acts as the designee in operational matters.
Organizes, develops and supervises the MiddRides operation.
Oversees parking management and the parking appeals process.

General Responsibilities
Assures commitment and compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, College rules, regulations and department policies by all department members.
Identifies and recommends programs for staff development and training.
Participates in the integration of Department of Public Safety services into the Commons (residential life system) and into the broader campus community.
Makes recommendations for Department of Public Safety facilities and equipment (vehicles, radios, etc.).
Promotes positive community service and relations with the entire campus community and assures all department members do the same.
Collaborates with the campus community to problem solve and resolve conflicts.
Performs other related responsibilities as requested; duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time and without notice.

Education
Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of federal and Vermont laws, criminal investigations, techniques and Vermont liquor laws.
Valid driver's license. Must handle confidential matters with appropriate discretion. Must pass extensive background investigation.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficient with a variety of technology and operating systems and software programs such as Windows and Microsoft.
Required to live within a 15 miles radius of the Middlebury College campus.

Experience
5-10 years of experience as a supervisor in security or law enforcement; work in managing operations within higher education preferred. Demonstrated work history of functioning effectively in challenging incidents and making decisions in emergency situations.
Physical Demands Must be physically fit, agile, willing to work evenings, overnights, weekends, rotate shifts and occasional long shifts.
