Associate Vice President for Safety and Security

ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

 

Opportunity:

The University of Virginia seeks an Associate Vice President for Safety and Security (AVPSS). The Associate Vice President for Safety and Security serves as the principle administrator in planning, directing, and managing the comprehensive law enforcement, general security, workforce safety and emergency preparedness services for all components of the University of Virginia. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the AVPSS will assume a wide range of responsibilities including the oversight of the University Police Department (UPD), the Security Systems and Services Unit, the Office of Safety and Emergency Preparedness and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety. The Associate Vice President will also serve as the University's Ambassador for all safety related services and will work closely with key strategic university, state, federal and local partners.

 

Key Priorities:

The Associate Vice President for Safety and Security will have opportunities for leadership and success in many areas, including the following:

  • Directs the administration, planning and organization of the University of Virginia Campus Safety and Security services, which includes police operations, law enforcement and security systems, emergency preparedness, threat assessment and management, workforce safety, and a finance and administration unit for the agency.
  • Works with individual Safety and Security unit leaders to develop rules, regulations, policies and procedures that govern the operations of each unit.
  • Makes decisions relative to emergency conditions not governed by established policies and procedures.
  • Provides oversight of the development and execution for the University of Virginia's Academic and Medical Center campus' Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity Plans.
  • Works collaboratively with key university and community stakeholders on law enforcement, security and public safety issues.
  • Analyzes current operations and services and develops strategic plans for optimizing those services to meet the demands of stakeholders.
  • Provides oversight of any planning and research functions to include the development of written directives to ensure compliance with laws and regulations of local, state and federal government agencies, law enforcement accreditation and University of Virginia policies.
  • Oversees the annual budget preparation and administration of the Safety and Security Services budget.

 

Professional Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a history of senior leadership experience and proven record of accomplishments within a safety and security organization(s), preferably within a major research university and/or academic medical center. The candidate will have the ability to work with senior leaders and professional staff on security technology, emergency preparedness, and public safety enhancement with the goal of leading a best-in-class public safety organization. Additional competencies for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master's degree preferred) from an accredited institution in criminal justice, public safety, public administration or related discipline.
  • Strong commitment to community engagement and inclusion, strong listening ability, recognition, and appreciation for diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Significant management experience with increasing responsibility as a ranking member of a law enforcement, or public safety manager, emergency preparedness manager, or similar position for a university or other large institutional campus.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in areas integral to comprehensive campus law enforcement and security operations including emergency planning and preparedness, threat assessment and management, Clery Act compliance and Title IX.
  • Proven success in working with stakeholders with diverse backgrounds, including students, parents, faculty and staff in University and Medical Center settings.
  • Proven success in the recruitment and development of diverse workforce units.
  • Proven ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee, and complete various projects with minimal supervision; remain calm and capably handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
