Assistant Chief of Campus PolicePosition Summary:

The Assistant Chief of Police co-administers police, security, and safety functions of the campus in order to ensure a safe environment for the pursuit of educational objectives by the campus community. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise daily activities and services of campus police department personnel; ensure physical safety and security of the campus and its stakeholders; to develop training programs for the campus police department personnel; oversee traffic control and enforce campus parking regulations; act as a liaison between the campus police department and various internal departments and external agencies; and fulfill other senior-level leadership roles as assigned. Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, the position supervises sworn and civilian staff, providing 24-hour administrative coverage of all incidents and activities that may occur on all campuses associated with Volunteer State.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Acts as directing manager in the absence of the Chief of Campus Police.

Supervises the daily activities and operations within the Campus Police Department by providing supervision, guidance, and direction to all subordinate department personnel.

Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff.

Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for the Campus Police Department.

Assigns work activities, projects and programs.

Monitors workflow.

Reviews and evaluates work products, methods and procedures.

Meets with staff to identify and correct deficiencies.

Initiates discipline and termination procedures.

Ensures adequate procedures are followed for protecting the security, confidentiality and integrity of departmental records.

Provides or coordinates professional development training of staff.

Commitment to sustaining and advancing the department's diversity.

Possesses a vision for continuing to build a progressive law enforcement agency with an emphasis on current trends and best practices in a higher education setting.

Directs and performs complex managerial work in the enforcement of laws and College policies and procedures.

Assists in the adherence to federal, state, and local laws and ordinances (including Clery and Title IX).

Reviews and interprets laws and regulations affecting the College and the protection of public safety.

Coordinates with external law enforcement agencies regarding responsibilities and responses.

Assists in the development and administration of the Campus Police annual budget.

Directs the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.

Directs the monitoring of and requests approval of expenditures.

Assists in the development of and implements emergency procedures for disasters and violent encounters.

Conducts campus wide emergency drills on a consistent basis.

Works closely with College departments and student groups to assure security and safety of campus and public activities.

Negotiates and resolves sensitive and controversial issues.

Responds to and/or oversees response to calls for service, including crimes in progress, reports of crimes or suspicious circumstances and/or makes arrests as warranted.

Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending training sessions, seminars, and workshops and reviewing published literature.

Supports the mission of the College and the Campus Police Department.

Works collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.

Represents the department at meetings and functions.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Associate's degree. Eight years of full time law enforcement experience, with a minimum of three years having been in a responsible administrative and/or supervisory role. Full time law enforcement experience must be within the last five years. Clear, accurate, and concise communication skills with high attention to detail, both verbally and in writing. Writing will be analyzed for expected levels of proficiency. Meets requirements in the State of Tennessee per T.C.A. 38-8-106 and T.C.A. 38-8-107. Out of state applicants are required to meet Tennessee P.O.S.T certification requirements within six (6) months of hire. Proficiency in firearms and non-lethal weapon operation. Possess a valid Tennessee driver's license. Out of state applicants must obtain a Tennessee driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire. Pass a thorough background investigation. Pass a medical examination. Pass a psychological evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents/College regulations. Demonstrated experience in development of appropriate intervention and response plans, special events planning, and ability to collaborate with internal/external stakeholders in an effort to problem-solve. Possess a broad understanding and working knowledge of a professional and modern campus law enforcement, including investigative supervisory skills, overseeing confidential and sensitive investigations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Work Characteristics: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students. Strong organizational and leadership skills. Ability to practice effective communication techniques both orally and in writing including ability to coordinate a variety of resources in gathering information and independently answering inquiries. Work involves frequent departmental or public interaction requiring professionalism, tactfulness, fairness, and decisiveness. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Mastery of Word and Excel. A better-than-average understanding and appreciation for computer systems and technology. Knowledge of state and federal laws.

Pay Rate: 44,090.00 - 53,466.00 annual salary depending on experience
