Salary Range: Anticipated hiring rage: $3,470 - $4,500 per month.

Position Description:
The College of Science and Mathematics is comprised of eight academic departments, including the School of Education. The College of Science and Mathematics technical services team supports tenure and tenure track faulty, faculty lectures, teaching associates, staff, and administrators. Under the direct supervision of the CSM Computing and Technical Support Team Supervisor and the direction of the associate dean, the CSM-ITC Foundation works in support of the CSM computing and technical services needs while ensuring excellent technical service college-wide. In addition to providing technical support services to the college this position works collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts, and support staff as a member of the CSM computing and technical support team to effectively utilize technology to enhance pedagogy and improve student learning. Incumbents at the foundation level work under direct supervision in performing the work assignments defined for their position and are able to apply a basic understanding of the standard principles and terminology of this role.

The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:

1. Provide basic consultative support to faculty and subject matter experts to enhance the use and access of technology and information systems.

2. Provide technical support of the university's instructional technology tools.

3. Assist in analyzing and diagnosing user needs for instructional technology and resolve problems in a timely manner.

4. Assist in developing and conducting user needs assessments.

5. Assist in recommending best practices, approaches and technology solutions to improve student learning.

6. Apply general knowledge of requirements for ADA compliance where appropriate.

7. Ensure laboratory classroom computing and technical needs are met.

8. Assist with oversight of network storage and ensure backup and restore procedures are effective.

9. Collaborate with stake holders to identify procedures that facilitate a smooth running production environment.

10. Contribute to the successful implementation of best practices and procedures to ensure security, availability, and reliability of the production environment.

11. Assess, plan, monitor and administer security system performance capacity and resource requirements on centrally supported operating systems.

12. Contribute to the design, development, customization, programming, and implementation of tools and solutions for automated services and user interfaces.

13. Research and recommend upgrades to hardware and software in order to maintain optimal performance, accommodate growth and incorporate new technology.

14. Assist with the assessment of vendor proposals and provide technical recommendations.

15. Provide staff and faculty with an understanding of best practices, policies, and procedures regarding accessibility, FERPA, and information security.

16. Assist with analyzing security requirements and implement procedures to meet those requirements. Regularly review assigned responsibilities to identify and manage security risks. Escalate security issues as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's Degree (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis)


Required Qualifications:
1. Working knowledge in using standard software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.
2. Knowledge of Windows and Mac operating systems. Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve computer software and hardware problems associated with these operating systems.
3. Knowledge of or the ability to follow network administration and data administration procedures.
4. Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications, including campus wide systems and multimedia environments, access procedures, networks and/or databases.
5. Knowledge of local area network system configuration, protocols, and/or transmission media.
6. Ability to install, configure, integrate and modify applications, networks, and other systems.
7. Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn and understand principles of student learning and pedagogy. Ability to apply those principles using technology in the development of learning modules and support of classrooms and laboratories.
8. Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn to evaluate instructional software, courseware development, and multimedia applications.
9. Ability to collaborate with faculty and other professionals to analyze, plan and devise methods to improve student learning at the university level.
10. Ability to use and train others in the use of course management systems and tools.
11. Knowledge with using standard software packages to develop and maintain web pages for instructional use.
12. Ability to analyze and resolve problems involving hardware, software and networking issues.
13. Ability to translate campus information security policy and standards into specific application risks and requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate application security.
14. Ability to apply consultative skills to assess users computing needs and provide appropriate support assessments.
15. Ability to deliver formal and informal training for faculty and other users regarding the effective use of technology in courses, curriculum, and general program support.
16. Demonstrated ability to research and evaluate new technologies to meet a wide variety of user needs.
17. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information appropriately and exercise tact, sound judgment, diplomacy, and discretion.
18. Ability to apply requirements for accessibility compliance.
19. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
20. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
21. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
22. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in computer science, educational technology or a related field.
2. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Special Conditions:

  • Ability to move desktop computer systems and printers (up to 50 lbs.) and work in confined spaces if necessary to support network connections.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
