Scott Center for Spiritual & Religious Life
The Associate Chaplain and Muslim Advisor assists the Dean of Spiritual and Religious Life and Director of the Scott Center with general duties related to the mission of the Center and serves as the advisor for the Muslim community on campus. The Associate Chaplain also supports and develops programs for Muslim students and serves as a resource on matters related to Islam, religious diversity, and interfaith dialogue. The successful candidate will work together with Scott Center colleagues to create thoughtful religious life programming and provide spiritual support and guidance to members of the college community.
The essential functions of Associate Chaplain and Muslim Advisor role include collaborating with the Dean/Director and other College Chaplains in providing leadership for major College functions, in providing pastoral care and counseling for all members of the campus community, and in developing religious and spiritual programming for students and the wider community. The Chaplain will also collaborate with their colleagues in the Scott Center and the Dean of the College's office to support vibrant and healthy student life on campus, and assist in facilitating interfaith dialogue and cooperation among student groups. This role serves as a resource for the entire campus community regarding Muslim religion, practice, and cultures while supporting Muslim life on campus through educational, cultural, and social programing for students, staff, faculty, and the wider community. Facilitating Jummah (Friday) Prayers and other important Muslim observations and holy-day events is also an essential function of this role.
Additionally, the Chaplain will work with the Admissions and Dean of Students Offices to recruit and retain Muslim students, and assist in fundraising as requested. They will also participate in the work of the Religious Life Council (RLC), as well as assisting in maintaining close relations between the Scott Center and local clergy and religious groups.
A strong candidate for the position will have a broad-based knowledge of Islamic religion, history, and cultures, and a post-baccalaureate training in pastoral care, Muslim chaplaincy, and multi-faith relations is desirable. A Bachelor's degree is required, and a Master's degree or other graduate study is preferred. Academic preparation may be in any relevant discipline. Experience in interfaith or higher education settings is preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form, as well as comfort in working and interacting with student life colleagues, other administrators and faculty with a commitment to the intellectual and cultural life of a highly selective, private, liberal arts community are also desired traits.
