California State University Dominguez Hills was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University System. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of approximately 14,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. Conditions of Employment:
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate is required to complete a background check prior to assuming this position.

Position Information:
This is a full-time, temporary position.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Special Working Conditions:
Wears distinctive clothing, safety shoes, and personal protective equipment appropriate to the job at hand, provided by the University. May be required to work overtime and alternate schedule days and hours as necessary to meet operational needs of the University.

Department: Facilities Services

Facilities Services is responsible for upkeep, repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds at the University, totaling in excess of 1,250,000 gross square feet of building space and 346 acres of grounds. The mission of the department is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, safe and comfortable physical environment conducive to learning and productivity.

Major Job Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Building Trades Manager, the Carpenter is responsible for full range of carpentry work. The incumbent will maintain and repair various facilities ensuring campus structures are in good condition, read blueprints, specifications, drawings and instructions to build sheds, scaffolds, fences, etc. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the installation and repair of dry wall, tiles, and repair and replace cabinets, counters, shelves, and other related carpentry items identified in the Carpenter classification series.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of methods, materials , tools and equipment used in both rough and finish carpentry; thorough knowledge of Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California applicable to carpentry and the California State Building Codes.

Abilities: Must be able to build, install and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry; operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of carpentry projects; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
State of California Class "B" or "C" Contractors License, CAL-OSHA Safety training certificates, and any other trade related certification.

Certifications: Valid Drivers license

Specialized materials:
During the performance of the positions assigned duties, the incumbent may use:

A variety of power and hand saws, routers, sanders, lathes, planers, drill presses and other power and hand tools related to the field of carpentry. In addition the position will require the use of University issued computers and related equipment to perform the necessary documentation and correspondence related to this field of work and service to the CSUDH campus.

Experience and Education:
Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Education: Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Participation in Carpentry Trades School or a Carpenters apprenticeship program highly desirable.

Required Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey--level skills equivalent to the acquired through the completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program.

Preferred Experience: Six years of journey level experience as a carpenter; a combination of experience and education leading to journey level skill may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Responsibilities:
65% - Maintains and repairs various types of buildings, and erects sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences and other structures. Builds and repairs cupboards, lockers, shelves, doors and window frames.

15% - Ensures carpentry tools, materials and equipment are in good condition and comply with safety codes and regulations. Provides information regarding the selection of building materials and use of appropriate equipment and tools. Makes recommendations regarding purchase and storage of building materials and supplies.

10% - Draft and review rough sketches of proposed carpentry projects. Inspect work and review for specifications and are in compliance with building and safety codes and regulations.

5% - Maintains simple records and work logs of building projects; attend and participate in all University required training.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this classification is: $4,903 - $6,265 monthly.
