Position Announcement

The faculty of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications from individuals for a Tenure Track position in the Department of Earth Science & Geography.

Responsibilities
The Department of Earth Science & Geography is seeking an Environmental Geographer at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will teach and perform research on the interaction of human activities and environmental processes. All spatial scales of study are welcome. Approaches involving remote sensing and/or GIS are favorable, as is research related to urban environments, natural resources, conservation and environmental protection, natural hazards, and environmental policy/history, among others.

Current teaching needs include upper division courses in Natural Resources, Environmental Analysis and Planning, Urban Environmental Geography, and the Biogeography of Southern California as well as introductory courses in Geography. Additional courses in the candidate's areas of expertise may be developed.

As a tenure-track faculty member, the expected teaching load is four courses per semester involving a range of general education, introductory and upper division courses for Geography, as well as supporting students in the Earth Science program. The successful candidate will have a record of teaching excellence and a commitment to teaching undergraduate students from a diverse population. The candidate will be expected to advise undergraduate students and perform service within the Department and College.

Department and College
The Department of Earth Science & Geography, in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, offers separate undergraduate degrees in Earth Science and Geography. Both programs feature a strong emphasis on understanding the natural world and human management of its natural resources. We also offer minors in Earth Science and Geography and a certificate in Geotechniques (which includes GIS and remote sensing). The Department emphasizes field activities and hands-on experiences for its undergraduate students. Many of our courses include field trips which provide opportunities for students to experience firsthand the topics covered in the classroom. Our programs promote the development of an informed citizenry for wise decision-making on issues related to natural resources, environmental quality, and sustainability, and provide technical training for entry into careers which pursue those emphases.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. (must be awarded prior to start of employment) in geography, natural resource management, environmental science, or a closely related field.
Evidence of successful teaching experience and a willingness to participate in service to the department.
Scholarly research agenda on the interaction of human activities and environmental processes.
Experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience and interest in service learning, community engagement, and/or citizen science.
Comfort and enthusiasm leading students on field learning experiences outside of the classroom.
Ability to create opportunities for undergraduate participation in research.
Candidates with interests in the urban environment are encouraged to apply.
