Salary Range: Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. Position Description:
Cal Poly is currently seeking a Director for Payroll Services in Administration and Finance - Payroll Services Department!
The Position:
This position is directly responsible for all payroll operations for the University. Managing a staff of eight, this position directs the day-to-day functions that ensure accurate and on-time payroll for approximately 6,500 faculty, staff, and student employees, with multiple deadline driven cycles. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and ensuring compliance with all applicable payroll rules and regulations, including but not limited to Chancellor's Office technical letters and related policies and State Controller's Office (SCO) technical letters and guidance. This position provides payroll data reporting for University audits and regularly provides guidance to the University Controller on detailed policy matters, many requiring interpretation and ingenuity in order to determine the best course of action.
Due to the high level of manual processing which is inherent in payroll, new and emerging technologies are constantly being reviewed for potential incorporation, with a goal of continuous process improvement, standard work instructions, and best practice. This position participates in CSU system-wide activities for payroll process development and/or policy interpretation and implementation, participates in system-wide or user group trainings, workshops and meetings, and sits on campus committees, representing the University on various financial matters.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of professional level experience in payroll processing, with at least two (2) years in a management/supervisory role.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
