Job Description Summary

The School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture in Auburn, Alabama, is accepting applications for a full-time faculty member at the tenure-track Assistant/Associate rank in the Program of Architecture's Rural Studio program. This position begins August 1 6, 2018. Salary and rank will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Rank is dependent on previous university-level teaching and scholarship experience.

Rural Studio is seeking applicants with an established, ongoing base of academic scholarship and/or professional expertise in at least one the following areas: building performance, residential enclosures, assemblies, and construction, affordable housing, or collaborative practice. The faculty position is designed to afford the successful applicant the opportunity to test and expand their research via applied, context-based instruction in a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree program.

Applied research and Instruction is part of Rural Studio, a design-build outreach program within the degree program in the Auburn Program of Architecture. Rural Studio is a remote, residency-based venue in Newbern, Alabama. Located in the Black Belt Region of West Alabama, Newbern (population 225) is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is made up of Hale, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa Counties. Newbern is approximately 145 miles from Auburn University's main campus.

Requirements for this position include: a master's degree in architecture or other terminal degree in a related field. Preferred qualifications include: evidence of outstanding design skills, experience teaching in a professional degree program via design-build teaching methods, and professional registration.

This position includes teaching a design-build studio and courses in related subjects including construction technology and contemporary issues related to public interest design, housing, and design theory. Adequate support for ongoing research, creative scholarship, peer review, and publication is also provided. The studio will consist of a fall and spring semester of approximately fifteen students each. The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors and staff of the Rural Studio program. The location of residency and instruction is Newbern, Alabama.
