Position Description:

The Alumni Relations department maintains a vital link between the University and its 185,000 alumni. Under the direction of the Alumni Outreach Specialist, Marketing & Communications, the Graphic Designer II serves as the primary point of contact for Alumni Relations' communications projects, producing media in accordance with the department's strategic communication objectives and University brand standards. In addition to coordinating and executing graphics projects, the Incumbent consults on marketing ideas and initiatives and collaborates with volunteers, staff and management to implement communications for the department and the Cal Poly Alumni Association. The Incumbent also serves as the administrator for the Alumni Relations website, coordinating the development of new elements and overseeing site maintenance. This position controls and defines the look, content and function of Alumni Relations' email communications and website domain including, content, site expansion, and web graphics.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's degree in journalism, graphic design, communications, or a related field and one year of design experience.


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design and production principles and communication theory including a basic understanding of marketing and promotion concepts.
    2. Strong graphic design skills and artistic ability in order to translate communication needs into an artistic design.
    3. Solid working knowledge of applicable graphic design software packages and hardware systems and peripherals. Ability to use interactive technologies and to create new methods for combining software and graphic packages to address communication and visual product goals.
    4. Thorough understanding of printing and other vendor services to prepare specifications for printing and other services. Ability to prepare camera-ready materials and a working knowledge of design and electronic prepress processes used in the production of complex publications.
    5. Excellent graphic design skills for print, online publications and collateral material with strong knowledge of various design software including Adobe Creative Suite, and interactive technologies including thorough understanding of file formats and peripheral software and working knowledge of graphics delivery and implementation software.
    6. Solid working knowledge of photo editing software; solid working knowledge of website development software, experience with content management systems, and working knowledge of Adobe Flash or similar web techniques.
    7. Ability to plan, coordinate and direct graphic art communications projects and handle multiple priorities.
    8. Working knowledge of copyright laws applicable to design work and creative properties.
    9. Ability to consult and communicate effectively with administrators, volunteers, staff and students and to interpret and translate their needs into effective visual formats
    10. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    11. Ability to supervise, train, support, and delegate work to others.
    12. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    13. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    14. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    15. Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    16. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    17. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Mastery in electronic file management and proper archiving practices across large networks
  • Digital design experience including building websites, Flash, and DSLR photography.
  • A strong understanding of web information architecture and demonstrated design skills.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, HTML/XHTML and CSS.

  • Ability to work for long periods of time at a desk on a computer or on other projects.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities in a busy work environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bonafide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
