Staff Attorney and Assistant Director of Legal Clinics

Job Summary:
The attorney/instructor for the Legal Clinic in Lima works full-time and year-round. The duties of the attorney/instructor position include supervising and assessing clinic students, assisting in conducting case rounds, engaging in planning of clinic activities, and participating in other clinic projects including orientation, recruitment, trainings, and community events, along with the Director of Legal Clinics. In addition, s/he teaches one additional law class per year.

Scope:
The attorney/instructor for the Legal Clinic in Lima works full-time and year-round. The duties of the attorney/instructor position include supervising and assessing clinic students, assisting in conducting case rounds, engaging in planning of clinic activities, and participating in other clinic projects including orientation, recruitment, trainings, and community events, along with the Director of Legal Clinics. In addition, s/he teaches one additional law class per year.

Principal Responsibilities:
The attorney/instructor meets regularly with clinic students to discuss, strategize, plan, and review cases, and accompanies students to court and administrative hearings. S/he also helps students plan and carryout community education events. S/he focuses on lawyering skills development through cases and simulations, supervising students in their role as "legal interns", and providing regular feedback, both orally and in writing, to students on their performance. Although the legal interns handle clients and cases directly, the attorney/instructor is the attorney of record and has the ultimate authority for the clinic cases. During student breaks and vacations, the attorney/instructor will be responsible for case management, including communication with clients, motions and trials. Vacations should be scheduled around the requirement of maintaining effective case coverage. Some evening and occasional weekend hours will be expected.
The Assistant Director works under the supervision of the Director of Legal Clinics and may be assigned additional responsibilities by the Director.

Required Skills:
In-depth knowledge of domestic relations, domestic violence, and/or child welfare is required. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and student supervision; excellent writing, editing, and oral advocacy skills; interpersonal skills; sound judgment and exceptional ethical standards; substantial trial experience; and a demonstrated commitment to working with low income individuals are all highly desirable.

Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. from an ABA -accredited law school, minimum of three years practice experience in related areas, and admitted to practice in Ohio or eligible to seek admission by motion required.
