Position Description:

The Position:
The coordinator of the National Network for Peer Accountability, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs at Cal Poly, will develop programming and outreach, focusing on creating a climate of peer-to-peer accountability for individual behavior at the time of challenging overall behaviors at colleges and universities worldwide. The Coordinator will work to build a program focused on the mission of the National Network for Peer Accountability (WITH US) to inspire improved peer accountability that will prevent disastrous outcomes through outreach, awareness, research, and resources and by being a conduit for bold ideas from students, parents and professionals.

The coordinator will partner with key individuals who will provide support via technology, marketing and communications, research, and fund development to help advance the efforts of the National Network.

About the Organization:
The newly-established National Network for Peer Accountability (to be known as "WITH US") is a non-profit dedicated to serving as a clearinghouse offering program resources to campuses across the U.S. and internationally in the area of peer accountability.

WITH US focuses on development and sharing of programs to help students successfully navigate college life by establishing community, gaining awareness, assuming responsibility, and by being examples to others.

WITH US will continue to be built upon the successes achieved by Aware Awake Alive relating to misuse of alcohol, with an extended focus on the risks associated with other student social behaviors including: sexual assault, hazing and other related assaults, depression and suicide, academic faltering and failure, and irresponsible behaviors and community clashes.

WITH US offers: a forum for sharing of best practices in building supportive student cultures that reduce risk; on-line tools and resources; research to validate shared best practices; and, training and national and international symposiums.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's degree and five years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; OR a Master's degree and four years of experience.


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
    2. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Affairs field and the developmental issues facing college students.
    3. Ability to perform complex student services professional work including developing and implementing training programs with minimal supervision.
    4. Ability to accurately assess the current and future academic needs of students in the areas of academic support, leadership, career development, service, interpersonal skills and diversity awareness.
    5. Ability to independently carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
    6. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters, including ability to be sensitive to individuals and groups where required.
    7. Ability to apply a high degree of judgment, persuasiveness, imagination, and professional skills and knowledge in developing and presenting programs.
    8. Demonstrated ability to use analytical skills for designing informal and formal learning assessments, interpreting results and making recommendations for future planning.
    9. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    10. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high-level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    11. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    12. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    13. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    14. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    15. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    16. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    17. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    18. Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    2. Experience working with high-risk behaviors in the collegiate environment, specifically focused on efforts to promote bystander intervention.
    3. Experience working in a non-profit environment.
    4. Experience working in an organization that serves college and university students across many different campuses.

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.

    May be required to complete a Supplemental Employment Application Questionnaire, which contains questions pertaining to conviction history, and submit it when requested by Cal Poly. This disclosure is confidential and will not necessarily preclude applicants from employment.
