Landscape Worker III

Position Title: Landscape Worker III

Pay Rate: $14.00-16.00 per hour

Job Summary: The focus of the Landscape Worker III position is to enhance the beauty of the campus grounds using sustainable, regenerative practices. This position includes daily trash pick-up, sweeping, using a leaf blower, mowing, line trimming, garden clean-up, pruning, snow removal, weeding, watering, planting, shoveling, raking, and daily open-up and lock-down procedures. Assist with building maintenance work as needed. As an essential employee, this position will be required to report to work even when normal operations have ceased, including holidays, inclement weather closures, and other crises.

Job Duties:
Landscape Responsibilities:
  • Daily trash pick-up, sweeping, using a leaf blower, mowing, line trimming, garden clean-up, pruning, snow removal, weeding, watering, planting, shoveling and raking.
  • Perform daily open-up and lock-down procedures.
  • Incorporate energy efficiency, conservation and sustainability concepts into maintenance work.
  • Complete assigned departmental work requests.
  • Perform classroom and special event setup.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and supply inventory.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems.
  • Install fences, benches, patios, retaining walls, and hardscape.
  • Operate power equipment.
  • Work on Snow Crew as needed.
  • Perform record keeping as required by supervisor.
  • Respond to Facilities emergencies as necessary.
  • Occasionally supervise up to two workstudy employees.
  • Additional specific departmental duties as assigned.

Caretaker Responsibilities:
  • Respond to alarms, calls of distress.
  • Act as a resource for the department and community.
  • Act as part of a team and ensure all other members of the department are supported, including occasionally working with them to help them complete their assigned duties.
  • Identify and report campus caretaking needs, such as cleanliness, landscaping, and maintenance issues.
  • Enforce Naropa policies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information including access codes, incident reports, investigation details, and private departmental knowledge.
  • Attend all necessary training.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must possess solid communication and organization skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in several of the following areas:
    • Plant care in urban landscapes.
    • Safe operation of power equipment.
    • Installation of fencing, benches, patios, retaining walls and hardscape.
    • Care and use of hand tools.
    • Maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • The ability to follow direction and meet deadlines.
  • Basic understanding of energy efficiency, conservation, and sustainability.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office products as well as the ability to learn new programs.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • An appreciation for contemplative education and the mission of Naropa University.
  • Willingness to co-create an inclusive community and actively participate in related professional development including openness to feedback and on-going self-examination.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Supervisory experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Willing and able to complete a fitness for duty exam.
  • In a regular workday, employee must continuously stand and walk, and frequently sit.
  • Employee must lift/carry 50 lbs frequently, and 70 lbs occasionally.
  • Employee must be able to bend, squat and reach above shoulder level frequently and crawl occasionally.
  • Employee must use LEFT and RIGHT hands for the following repetitive actions, simple grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine manipulation.
  • Employee must use LEFT and RIGHT feet for repetitive action.
  • Employee is exposed to heat/cold, dust, dampness, height, and moving machinery.
