Associate Professor, Special Education

Position Description:

The University of Northern Iowa invites applications for an associate professor position in Early Childhood Special Education to begin August 13, 2018. We seek an individual capable of fulfilling the following roles: Coordinating the Early Childhood Special Education Program, including accreditation, advisement, recruitment of students, curriculum planning, and program assessment duties; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood special education and special education; collaborating with local schools, agencies and service providers; providing field-based supervision; engaging in scholarly activity and research pertinent to early childhood special education; and providing service to the department, college, university, community and profession at large.

The Department of Special Education provides education, advocacy, and leadership at the local, state, and national level. We are located in a newly renovated building that includes a state-of-the-art learning technology classroom. UNI has a bold vision that we will be a diverse and inclusive campus community that provides an engaged education empowering students to lead locally and globally. We seek faculty across disciplines, departments, and colleges to work together to build our national prominence in any of four distinct but interrelated areas of our vision and strategic plan: engaged learning, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and community engagement. Successful candidates with background and interest in these areas will form clusters to advance our work, joining current faculty conducting teaching, scholarship, and service in these areas.

Education Requirements:

An earned doctorate in special education with emphasis in early childhood special education or a closely related field required.

Required Qualifications:

Additional requirements include teaching experience in natural and/or inclusive early childhood settings (birth age 8); an established record of higher education teaching, research, and scholarship focused on early childhood special education; knowledge of early childhood special education professional standards and inclusive, developmentally appropriate practices, including the provision of accommodations and differentiated instruction; and demonstrated competence in interdisciplinary and interagency collaboration.

Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with expertise or experience with one or more of the following: (1) three or more years teaching experience with young children with disabilities; (2) exemplary and extensive teaching experience (three years minimum) at the undergraduate and graduate level in a variety of formats (e.g. face-to-face, online, blended); (3) expertise in one or more of the following: curriculum design, assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication, linguistically and culturally diverse populations, children with complex and/or high needs, early intervention; (4) extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and evidence of ability to secure external funding and; (5) experience with program coordination, including accreditation, advisement, recruitment, and program assessment.
