Assistant General Counsel



Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, is a regionally accredited four-year comprehensive institution offering 58 distinct graduate and undergraduate programs. Located on the historic Eastern Shore, SU's beautiful campus is some 30 miles from the Atlantic beaches and 2.5 hours from Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Salisbury University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant General Counsel.

Primary Job Duties: Provide legal guidance and assist General Counsel in interpretation of issues of importance to the University. Duties include legal research on various legal matters including policy and procedure development and implementation, regulatory issues, writing and review of contracts to include affiliation agreements with hospitals and health care organizations, among others. Position will include: establishing and maintaining a compliance program to ensure that federal and state laws, regulations of agencies, and University and USM policies are followed and policies are up to date; responding to subpoenas, and MPIA/FOIA requests; drafting and review of various legal documents; as well as other legal issues that the University may encounter. Under supervision of General Counsel, AGC will collaborate with the Attorney General's Office on various legal matters.

Minimum Qualifications: Law degree from an accredited law school, be a member of the Maryland State Bar in good standing, and have a minimum of three years of experience advising clients on various legal matters.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of legal principles, theories, techniques, and methodology in the field, as well as relevant federal, state, local law. Willingness to learn and receive direction from General Counsel on higher education law and applications in a higher education setting. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality as well as provide clear analysis and recommendations to General Counsel and others.

Must be detail oriented and have excellent interpersonal, customer service, organization and planning, prioritization, problem solving, follow through, time management, and oral and written communication skills. Also, must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior higher education experience either as in-house counsel, outside counsel, or advisor.

This is a full-time, professional exempt State position with a full benefits package. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
