California State University, Dominguez Hills, was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of over 12,500 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. The University, with its five Academic Colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people, and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services.

Conditions of Employment:

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate is required to complete a background check prior to assuming this position

Position Information:

Full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Department: Facilities Services

Facilities Services is responsible for the upkeep, repair and maintenance of State owned and operated buildings and grounds, totaling in excess of 1,250,000 gross square feet of building space and 346 acres of grounds. The department's mission is to provide an aesthetically appealing, well-maintained, safe and comfortable physical environment conducive to learning and work.

Major Job Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, the Lead Custodian performs a variety of day-to-day lead custodial duties, including organizing and leading custodial staff and does related work as assigned and required.

In addition to performing the full range of custodial work of the Custodian, the Lead Custodian performs work assignments that typically include some or all of the following: perform the full range of custodial work as needed; assist custodial staff in performing their duties; and provide support during absences; train and instruct others in the performance of their duties, including appropriate custodial practices and techniques, and the safe use of equipment and materials; assign, review, and inspect the work of assigned staff, including completing inspection forms; assist in maintaining employee time records and reporting absences and provide input to employee evaluations; coordinate custodial support for campus events; identify and report equipment, supply, and repair needs; identify and order necessary supplies and materials.

Qualifications:
Knowledge:
Working knowledge of the methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures;
Working knowledge of effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques;
Working knowledge of safety and sanitation measures appropriate for custodial work;
Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in custodial maintenance of facilities and an understanding of safety requirements for all types of vacuum cleaners, wet vacuums, high speed buffers, manual floor machines, automatic floor machines, and carpet cleaning equipment.

Abilities:
Ability to provide lead work direction, including training others in proper work methods (including custodial floor care) and safety;
Ability to provide feedback on work performance;
Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position;
Ability to use computers to track work orders and order supplies and materials;
Ability to establish, promote and maintain cooperative work relationships with others; and analyze situations and take appropriate action;
Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with administration, faculty, students, and other employees;
Ability to communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Ability to use and care for custodial floor care equipment and supplies.
Ability to observe and promote safe working conditions.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Certificates or specialized training in vinyl composition tile and carpet care is preferred.

Certification:
Valid Driver's License

Experience and Education:

Preferred Education: High School graduation or equivalent.

Required Experience: Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others.

Preferred Experience: Five (5) years of experience in custodial cleaning operations and at least one (1) year custodial experience working in a university or campus setting.

Salary Range: The salary range for this classification is: $2,713 - $4,702 monthly.
