Benefits Specialist - Human Resources


In support of the University's mission, Human Resources partners with University communities to provide a broad array of programs and services contributing to a progressive and productive work environment that meets the challenges of a changing world.

To serve as a Benefits Specialist, a successful candidate must have complete knowledge of all university benefit plans/provisions as well as have a benefits administration background working with plan compliance. Familiarity with audit controls and procedures a plus. This position will counsel and assist staff, faculty and retirees regarding the following benefit programs: health, dental, vision, health care and dependent care FSA accounts, life, AD&D, long term disability, long term care insurance, 401(a) Basic, 403(b) Voluntary and 457(b) retirement plans, and other miscellaneous programs such as MetLaw, auto and home insurance, etc. This position will have a primary focus on Leave of Absence . Compliance expertise regarding state and federal legislation (i.e. COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA, ACA, Labor Laws, etc.) required. This individual must provide superior customer service to internal and external customers, be able to track, audit and prioritize work and respond quickly and accurately to requests. Candidate must be able to solve complex problems through analysis have strong organizational skills and be detail oriented. This individual must maintain complete confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years experience/in-depth knowledge of the administration of a full range of benefit programs, including retirement plans.
  • Bachelor s Degree or comparable work experience, plus additional courses and seminars related to benefits administration/processing and human resources information systems.
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, PeopleSoft (or similar HRIS system).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive professional knowledge of a wide variety of health/wellness and retirement programs; current knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Research experience; specifically the ability to research and confirm that enrollment information complies with state and federal regulations.
  • Audit experience; ensures that benefit programs are being administered according to Plan documents and that the PeopleSoft system reflects current/accurate data.
  • Strong communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills. This position interacts on a daily basis with staff, faculty, third-party administrators and vendors.
  • Great organizational skills.
  • Accuracy.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work accordingly.
  • Maintains confidentiality with active/retired staff and faculty records.
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft reporting writing and Self Service Products a plus.
  • SPHR, PHR or CEBS certification.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Regularly scheduled to work 35 hours per week. However, this position may be required to work additional hours during nights/weekends based on the needs of the department during busy periods (i.e. annual benefits open enrollment, special projects, etc.). Although main office is Medford, this job requires travel once per week to other campuses (Boston and Grafton) for office hours and orientation.
