Copy Editor/Proofreader, FAS Donor Relations

Duties & Responsibilities
SUMMARY: The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader is charged with copy-editing and proofreading acknowledgments and stewardship reports to donors about how their gifts have been used to benefit education in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at Harvard, and to express appreciation. The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader primarily reviews stewardship reports and student biographies as part of the undergraduate financial aid stewardship program; this is the copy editor's top priority during the reporting season, which may run from July through April in a given fiscal year. The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader is charged with copy-editing and proofreading other team communications as needed throughout the year. The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader must possess superb editing and fact-checking abilities, meticulous proofreading skills, a close attention to detail, and superior time management skills. A solid understanding of an academic environment) is preferred. The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader must also be able to work with highly confidential information with a high level of discretion.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Must be an experienced copy editor, with excellent proofreading and editing skills, and a strong command of English grammar. Must have the ability to adapt style to many voices, based on multiple signatories, while ensuring consistency across communications.
  • Must pay exceptional attention to detail, be able to multi-task, and remain organized while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality and a high level of professionalism under deadline pressure. Must fact-check prose for accuracy based on a variety of sources including questionnaire responses, fund use information from administrators, the BSR Advance alumni database, and online sources.
  • Holds primary responsibility for verifying beneficiary information, fund use information, and standardizing reports for consistency. Must be willing to help communicate these standards to writers.
  • Must be able to work without close supervision, accept constructive feedback, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates a focus on superior customer service, a strong work ethic, and an ability to take initiative.
  • The Stewardship Copy Editor/Proofreader should be able to electronically review and edit reports. 24-48 hour turnaround is ideal.
  • Serves as a resource for team and other FAS Development colleagues with regard to language, style, grammar, and proofreading best practices. May be asked to review other documents within the organization as needed.
  • Requires strong computer skills: strong in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to locate reputable information on the Internet; knowledge of FileMaker Pro, BSR Advance, InDesign a plus.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years professional/professional copy editing/professional writing experience.
  • Computer literacy skills required in MS Office Suite.
Additional Qualifications
  • Bachelor s degree from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Needs a wide-ranging knowledge of current affairs, particularly in higher education and research, plus curiosity, imagination, and a genuine interest in the ongoing affairs of the University.
  • Familiarity with donor relations and development preferred.
