Department Summary:
Bridgewater State Universitys Department of Fiscal Affairs provides stakeholders and the campus community with timely, relevant and accurate fiscal reporting in accordance with federal, state and other laws and regulations. The Fiscal Affairs Department oversees the areas of general accounting, student accounts and fiscal functions of the University and the Universitys component units.

This is an AFSCME unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Under the direction of the Assistant Comptroller, the Accountant I is responsible for daily support of the reconciliations of cash receipts, disbursement cycle entries and fiscal related activities of both the University and University's Component Units. This position will aid in maintaining the University's official accounting records to ensure they are properly maintained in accordance with external laws and reporting requirements, internal policies, and generally accepted accounting principles and to ensure the accuracy of the University and component unit's financial records.

The Accountant I provides direct support to the Assistant Comptroller as well as to the Division of Finance and various University Departments.

Essential Duties:
Core Duties:

1. Responsible for the reconciliation of daily cash receipts of the Component units including cash, checks and credit cards. This Includes validation to source documentation provided and verification to accounting system.
2. Responsible for ensuring receipts are deposited daily in the bank.
3. Coordinate invoice payment authorizations with Universitys Component Units, Foundation and Alumni Association.
4. Review and match up invoice payment authorizations with invoices and corresponding purchase orders prior to disbursement.
5. Review, input and process invoice payments through Financial Edge including matching to correct tax documents on file including W-9 and proper general ledger fund and account to be charged.
6. Communicate with University personnel and outside vendors to resolve receipt or disbursement discrepancies.
7. Perform other projects, reports and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, or (B) two yeas of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in accounting or auditing, or any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions as listed in the MA State Job Specifications.

2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting including terminology.

3. Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.

4. Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data, to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.

5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as financial reports, accounts and ledgers.

6. Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc. governing assigned unit activities.

7. Ability to perform mathematical calculations using formulae to solve accounting problems.

8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

9. Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through questioning individuals.

10. Ability to maintain accurate records.

11. Ability to prepare genera and financial reports.

12. Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence.

13. Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression.

14. Ability to exercise sound judgment.

15. Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.

16. Ability to deal tactfully with others.

17. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

18. Ability to work independently.

19. Ability to work in a team setting.
