Responsibilities:

The Archivist and Instruction Librarian has two primary responsibilities, leading and managing the College's Archives under the direction of the Head of Collection Management and providing general and subject specialized library information literacy instruction, research consultations and support, and collection development for assigned departments or programs, supervised by the Coordinator of Reference Services.

College Archivist

1. Responsible for the management and administration of the College Archives, a repository of historical materials (physical and digital) relating to the founding, development, and ongoing work of Saint Mary's College of California. Major areas of responsibility include:
A. Articulate collection and campus records management strategies for the archives
B. Work with donors and with the staff of the college to acquire new collections
C. Organize and process collections
D. Describe collections and write finding aids
E. Oversee digitization of college historical materials
F. Assist campus and external community and researchers in using the collections
G. Collaborate with faculty to incorporate student involvement with primary research sources into the curriculum
H. Hire, train and supervise 2-3 student assistants who currently work ~20 hrs/week total.

2. Instruction and Reference Services

A. First Year Instruction:
1.) Works with the Instruction Coordinator to integrate the Core Curriculum learning outcomes for Information Evaluation and Research Practices into first-year programs, especially the Composition Program
2.) Partners with Composition faculty and the Information Literacy Librarian to design and deliver library instruction for classes in the Composition Program
3.) Maintains records of instructional activities; participates in the work of the Instruction Team; stays current with new teaching ideas and techniques pertinent to library instruction and professional trends and best practices in this area.

B. Reference/Research Services:
1.) Provides general reference to the SMC community & visitors. Provides a subject and course-specialized research support to students and faculty in assigned subject fields.
2.) Maintains in-depth knowledge of SMC curriculum and faculty research in these subject fields.
3.) Participates in the work of the Reference Team, seeks out training and learning opportunities to stay abreast of reference services in assigned subject fields.

3. Subject Specialist for Assigned Departments/Programs
a. Provides general and specialized instruction and research support to classes and individuals assigned subject fields. In consultation with faculty, establishes class and program-level learning outcomes for information literacy competencies in support of developing research skills and critical thinking skills.
b. Collaborates with assigned faculty liaisons on collection development and management.
d. Develops subject-specialized web pages, tutorials and learning objects.
e. Maintains and develops in-depth knowledge of curriculum, faculty research topics and publishing trends in assigned subject fields in order to shape the collections to meet the needs of the departments and the SMC community.
f.Understands and follows the Library's collection development policy and procedures, develops and maintains knowledge of the overall collection and resources; and develops expertise in the specialized resources particular to the fields.
g. Seeks out training and learning opportunities to stay abreast of the subject fields for which the incumbent is responsible.
h. Actively participates in Library Team meetings for instruction, collection development, and reference.
i. Actively participates with faculty and Collection Development Manager in preparing Library section of a new course and program proposals and program reviews for assigned subject fields.

4. Campus and Professional Contributions:
a. Actively Seeks out and participates in events and opportunities to communicate with our on-campus and off-campus constituencies about the Library's collections and services.
b. Serves on campus committees.
c. Contributes to the profession through involvement in professional organizations, conference presentations, research and/or publications.



Experience and Qualifications:

Education:
Required: MLS from an accredited program and Society of American Archivists Certification
Preferred: Society of American Archivist or American Records Management Association certification or training. Demonstrated effective and innovative classroom teaching experience. Professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Experience:
1. Demonstrated successful working experience in archives required, preferably in an academic setting
2. Familiarity with professional standards, best practices, and emerging technologies in both libraries and archives.
3. Demonstrated understanding of the principles and practice of providing academic library services
4. Desirable: Experience with information literacy instruction programs supporting critical thinking skills and course, department, and campus level learning outcomes.

Skills/Abilities:
1. Knowledge of best practices in information literacy instruction at a college level.
2. Demonstrated experience with the policies, procedures, and practices of archival work.
3. Ability to address national educational standards and develop scaffold instruction.
4. Strong organizational and project management skills.
5. Social media skills.
6. Desirable: Understanding of and experience with assessment principles and best practices.
7. Proficiency with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology and electronic resources and tools.
8. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral form.
9. Ability to exercise initiative, make independent decisions & interpret policies.
10. Ability to work effectively with diverse staff, faculty & students.
11. Ability to work successfully both as an active, collaborative team member and independently.
12. Commitment to professional issues, including active participation in local, state, regional, or national associations and awareness of current research in the field of Library Science.
